Laurence is a Deputy General of the Woods Dynasty and Ember's closest military subordinate during the war with the Solid Earth Kingdom. His loyalty to her is constrained by responsibility for family still living under the Dynast, leaving him to preserve the army she was forced to abandon until she can return.

Reading a war the court refused to understand

Laurence first appears in Ember's command staff as the conflict stops behaving like the limited border war the Woods Dynasty expects. He recognizes that noble forces are moving and questions what profit could justify their involvement, helping identify that the Solid Earth Kingdom's preparations are broader than the official explanation. When scouts disappear and the Dynast offers only token aid, Laurence continues proposing information-gathering measures rather than pretending the army's existing plan is adequate. His loyalty is personal as well as professional. He challenges the Dynast's envoy when the man insults the army and recognizes the danger in the envoy's private message to Ember. Years of deteriorating war leave the Woods soldiers exhausted and demoralized. When Ember returns, Laurence recognizes her immediately despite her changed power and admits that he could not reverse the decline. At Ravenhill, Laurence keeps soldiers firing while promised reinforcements approach, then orders retreat when the gate begins to fail. The withdrawal becomes part of a larger encirclement once Woods forces and hidden allies close around the attackers. Laurence remains near Ember through the later crisis surrounding Nux and is alive at his final direct appearance.
