Kaelgran

Kaelgran Forgeheart is the Stoneborn co-leader of Velcria and commander associated with its durable frontline forces. He initially dismisses Ember's Sovereign-level mercenary party, but their performance against his son and in the war with Tandris forces him to exchange pride for deference.

Biography

Challenging the mercenaries

Velcria hires Ember's party because rumors suggest that its Sovereigns can kill Primordials, yet Kaelgran refuses to trust power he cannot see. He calls the women weaker than promised, threatens force, and argues that Velcria should seek another party. His anger reflects Stoneborn pride and the pressure of a war that Velcria must win before a higher-level allied world demands reinforcements, but it also nearly turns the hired solution into another conflict. Liora restrains him and restarts negotiations. (Chapters 1826–1828)

Kaelgran remains openly skeptical when Ember claims her Law can amplify an army enough to take Tandris's capital with limited casualties. A practical demonstration changes his assessment. Rune defeats his son Granson and remains completely unaffected when Kaelgran's Primordial aura suppresses the young Stoneborn nearby. Although Kaelgran intervenes because Granson refuses to accept defeat and is humiliating himself, the encounter shows him that the mercenaries' stage does not describe their effective power. He becomes the first Velcrian leader to say Ember's later demonstration will work. (Chapters 1829–1832)

Ceding command for Velcria's survival

Ember proves her Law by taking command of part of Velcria's own army and decisively defeating an equal force. Kaelgran and the other leaders then surrender operational control to her because minimizing deaths matters more than preserving their prestige. He questions her decision to wait a week, now from curiosity rather than opposition, and accepts her plan to let the soldiers spread trust in their new general before the invasion. Kaelgran enters Tandris expecting a brutal war in which even he might die. Instead, Ember's coordinated army tears through the defenders with only a fraction of the expected losses. When an enemy Dreadborn appears to take Ember through her shadow, Kaelgran wants the leaders to move, and later stops Elaris from interfering once the confrontation exceeds their power. His conduct has shifted from threatening the mercenaries to recognizing when action would only create more deaths. (Chapters 1837–1847)

The later arrival of Nux and Aeliana exposes an even greater gap. Kaelgran freezes when their attention falls on him, knowing that his earlier attempt to suppress Rune could make him a target, and he does not pretend that Velcria's combined power could protect him. After the women win the war and return with a large army, he is prepared to kneel rather than provoke another futile fight. Their purpose is only to confirm mission completion and claim their ships; Kaelgran bows with the other leaders, survives, and remains part of Velcria's leadership at his last appearance. Appearance and personality

Kaelgran is a five-meter-tall Stoneborn with a massive humanoid build, rocky skin resembling polished gemstones, and eyes like glowing molten magma. The corpus gives no clothing, age, or individualized coloration beyond these racial traits. (Chapters 1826–1827)

He is proud, impatient, blunt, and quick to anger, traits the narration associates with Stoneborn culture. Kaelgran nevertheless possesses enough honesty to revise his position: he admits the evidence of Rune's resistance, trusts Ember after her demonstration, and accepts subordinate battlefield judgment once he understands the difference in strength. He cares about Velcria and is prepared to die in its war, but later recognizes that sacrificing allies in an unwinnable confrontation would be waste rather than courage. (Chapters 1826–1858)

Primordial Stoneborn body

Kaelgran is a Primordial-stage Stoneborn. Stoneborn skin functions as natural armor, and the race is known for durability, brute strength, and siege warfare; however, Kaelgran does not personally demonstrate a strike, defensive feat, regeneration, or named body technique. Those racial descriptions establish likely foundations, not quantified individual limits. Law of Self and suppressive aura

Kaelgran can release a Primordial aura tied to his Law of Self. He uses it to force his son Granson to the ground when the younger Stoneborn refuses to concede defeat. Rune is close enough to receive incidental suppression, yet does not react; Kaelgran states that an ordinary Sovereign should at least have fallen to her knees. This demonstrates the aura's stage-based pressure and Rune's exceptional resistance, but the source does not explain its activation cost, maximum range, duration, offensive applications, or whether the Law has capabilities beyond suppression. As a Velcrian leader, Kaelgran represents the Stoneborn Granite Legion, a force of roughly four hundred thousand built around durable frontline and siege roles. Its elite Earthshapers can reshape battlefields, but these are capabilities of the army's specialist soldiers rather than demonstrated personal techniques of Kaelgran. His practical leadership includes evaluating mercenaries, participating in strategic decisions, and yielding field command to Ember once her Law offers Velcria a safer route to victory. • Ember: Kaelgran begins by threatening Ember and rejecting her claims. Her military demonstration and decisive war leadership make him accept her command, and he later bows in gratitude when her party returns to close the mission. (Chapters 1826–1858)
