Carlen
Carlen is an official of the Light faction who processes worlds seeking aid at the City of Remission. His indifference toward Greenmarch's catastrophe becomes Nux's demonstration of Light's coercive hypocrisy, ending with Carlen's death and the extraction of his memories.
Biography
Remission without mercy
Carlen receives the daughter of Greenmarch's Progenitor after universal tremors kill roughly a million people and devastate her world. He does not look at her, points her toward “Remission,” and offers help only through the system that binds Greenmarch into six centuries of service. The ritual lets Light describe coerced submission as authorized devotion. (Chapters 2143–2144)
Nux attacks Carlen after observing the exchange. Carlen cannot escape his grip and screams for the same woman he dismissed to save him, only to meet her frozen fear. Nux's Devouring Mist consumes him while exposing how little the faction's promises protect one of its own officials. (Chapters 2145–2146)
The Greenmarch woman later remembers Carlen's death as the first step in the event that makes her world a target of Light's investigation. Nux reads the relevant memories and uses the wider operation to relocate threatened worlds and people. Carlen himself does not return. (Chapter 2151)
Appearance and personality
The supplied chapters identify Carlen as a male Light official but do not provide stable details for his face, hair, species, clothing, height, or build. (Chapters 2143–2145)
He is aloof, bureaucratic, and confident in institutional protection until personally threatened. His plea to the Greenmarch woman mirrors the dependency he refused to acknowledge in her case. (Chapters 2143–2145)
Abilities and cultivation
Carlen has enough standing to operate within the Light faction, but the corpus does not state his cultivation phase, Law, Domain, named technique, or weapon. Nux's physical and energetic superiority prevents a meaningful combat demonstration. (Chapters 2143–2146)
