Baal
Baal is the black-armored leader of the powerful creatures who protect Gaap. Although he addresses Gaap as Master and directs the group in battle, later testimony establishes that Baal and most of the others originally belonged to Hereswith and served her disciple only temporarily in her memory.
Biography
The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss
When Sion tries to bully Lux, Gaap orders Baal to teach the Saint a lesson. Baal obeys but first assigns Carol to guard their physically vulnerable master, then limits the fight to five Empyrean-Ranked World Bosses and warns the group against provoking a war with Agartha. His joking rock-paper-scissors selection and later approval of Blackfire’s supposedly accidental capture of Sion reveal a commander who mixes discipline with mischief. He protects comrades whose weaknesses need covering, prepares for future Saint-level clashes after Hana falls, and later joins Diablo in using the soul-striking Oblivion Slash against a Succubus Queen. (Chapters 856–860, 863, 865, 889)
The Divine Army reckoning
Before Gaap’s final stand, he reveals that Baal and the other long-serving creatures were never his true Covenant members: they belonged to Hereswith and protected him after her death. As Gaap dies, Baal thanks him for doing everything he could to avenge their original master and calls service under him an honor. Gaap then frees the group from their temporary contract and orders them to return to Hereswith. Baal’s latest documented state is therefore neither death nor destruction; it is release from Gaap’s service after completing a guardianship rooted in loyalty to both master and disciple. (Chapters 976, 983)
Appearance and personality
Baal is covered from head to foot in black armor, concealing any face or species beneath it. He is respectful toward his masters, protective of Gaap, confident against Saints, and trusted by the other Named Creatures as their leader. His dry humor and willingness to exploit Blackfire’s antics coexist with tactical restraint: he considers political consequences, assigns protection, compensates for allies’ elemental weaknesses, and tries to prevent unnecessary deaths among the group. (Chapters 856–860)
Abilities and skills
Baal is an Empyrean-Ranked World Boss who can hover or fly and fight with a sword. His named technique, Oblivion Slash, produces soul-based damage capable of hurting a Demigod even when no surface wound appears, making it threatening to enemies with formidable physical defenses. He also coordinates combat telepathically and understands how to distribute comrades according to their strengths and weaknesses. The corpus does not define Oblivion Slash’s range, cost, or frequency, nor does it show Baal defeating a Saint alone; his leadership during the Sion encounter relies on a team of comparable World Bosses, while his attack on the Succubus Queen is paired with Diablo’s Hellfire Annihilation. (Chapters 857–860, 889)
