Wargod's Token

Overview

The Wargod's Token is a worn circular disk representing Wargod Grognak's favor to the Blackgorge Tribe. It passes with the chiefship, but it does not grant a chief's private wish on demand. Its documented activation runs in the opposite direction: Grognak lights the token when he wants the new chief to come to him. (Chapters 188, 191–192)

History

An unanswered inheritance passes to Theo

The real token is a grimy, edge-worn disk with a central hole and string, visually little different from a decoy previously used to mislead enemy chiefs. Chief Blackgorge spends days channeling zeal and prayers into it, hoping Grognak will advance him to Silver Skin, but receives no answer. When Theo becomes Blackgorge chief, Meldrik confirms that the token and its associated favor pass to him. Theo likewise fails to activate it by feeding it zeal and stores it for later examination, demonstrating that possession and magical power are insufficient to compel a response. (Chapter 188)

Grognak summons the tribe's new chief

After Theo rebuilds Blackgorge authority, he finds the token glowing among the remains of his hut. Meldrik concludes that the tribe misunderstood the mechanism: the token exists so Grognak can contact its holder. Its glow verifies Theo's invitation at the Wargod's temple and opens the way to a personal audience. Grognak explains that his favor belongs to the tribe rather than one chief, rejects both Blackgorge's private advancement request and Theo's first request concerning Deania, then supplies guidance tied to the tribe's larger future. The light goes out during the audience, and Theo returns the token to his pocket. (Chapters 191–192)

Abilities and properties

  • Remote summons: The disk glows when Grognak initiates contact. No successful holder-initiated activation is shown. (Chapters 188, 191–192)
  • Authority credential: It passes with the Blackgorge chiefship and gains Theo immediate recognition and entry at Grognak's temple. (Chapters 188, 192)
  • Sign of a tribal favor: The token records Grognak's obligation to the Blackgorge Tribe as a collective. It is not a blank wish-granting device, and Grognak decides what assistance fulfills that obligation. (Chapter 192)
  • Dormant latest state: The token's light extinguishes once Theo presents it. It remains physically intact, but no second summons or further active function is documented. (Chapter 192)
