Hero's Bane

Overview

Hero's Bane is the Hidden Serpent family's named signature sword and Eltiana Violet's principal close-range weapon. Its surviving enchanted hilt contains a poison reservoir and workings that spread and enhance the loaded toxin, while iron and blade magic help breach elven defenses. When it enters the story the ancient blade is gone and the hilt is damaged; Theodore Waltz restores it with a new iron blade, leaving the weapon deadly but not fully returned to its legendary original state. History

Hidden Serpent heirloom and repair

Eltiana presents Hero's Bane as a family heirloom whose blade was broken and stolen generations earlier. The ironwood hilt and its inner scripted poison cylinder survive, but rust, wear, and the missing blade make it unusable. Theo takes the weapon apart, preserves its remaining enchantments, and fits a replacement iron blade. He removes stray iron from the grip for elven safety, but explicitly notes that the new blade itself still lacks enchantments. (Chapters 87–88)

Crimson Eye Observer hunt

Sava fills the repaired sword with Cursed Venom Concoction for an assassination attempt against a True Mage Crimson Eye Observer. The first thrust misses when the monster wakes, but Eltiana uses the ensuing battle as cover, drives Hero's Bane into its back, and lets the hilt pump poison into the target until the group can finish it. The victory establishes the weapon's intended method: concealment and one well-placed injection are more important than winning a direct exchange. (Chapters 88–90, 92, 94–97)

Capital and later dungeon fighting

Eltiana retains Hero's Bane through Hearthwood's expansion and carries it into the royal capital. Against Taka, a slash across his back delivers poison that combines with other debuffs to slow him, but his superior realm still lets him knock the sword aside and maim her. After becoming a True Mage, Eltiana uses the weapon against another Crimson Eye Observer; even with poison and improved cultivation, she needs Theo's help against the stronger late True Mage monster. (Chapters 104, 106, 114, 159–160, 167)

Abilities and properties

• Poison reservoir: A cylinder in the hilt is filled before combat. A successful thrust activates handle enchantments that inject, spread, and enhance the poison inside the target. (Chapters 87–90)
• Iron penetration: The repaired blade's iron and the surviving magic help cut through defenses used by elves and magical monsters. The new blade is not itself fully enchanted, so the restoration is incomplete. (Chapters 87–88, 114)
• Large delivered dose: Loaded with Cursed Venom Concoction, the reservoir can carry far more toxin than an ordinary coated edge and continues pumping while embedded. Actual lethality still depends on landing the strike and on the target's realm and resistance. (Chapters 88–90, 159–160, 167)
• Assassin's weapon, not an automatic victory: Hero's Bane is most effective from concealment or amid distraction. Awake, stronger targets evade, counterattack, or survive long enough to injure Eltiana despite being poisoned. (Chapters 89–90, 159–160, 167)

The corpus does not establish whether Theo later restores the original blade enchantments, changes the reservoir, or upgrades the sword beyond the Chapter 88 repair. Its latest documented condition is functional in Eltiana's hands, with no subsequent loss recorded. (Chapters 88, 114, 159–167)

Custody and users

Hero's Bane remains Eltiana's property throughout its documented history. No transfer after Chapter 167 is shown, so “last known retained” is stronger than declaring its condition or location at Chapter 465. (Chapters 87–167)
