Bald Man's Pocket Watch

Overview

The Bald Man's Pocket Watch is the initiating artifact through which Xoreth directs Theo to the Wanderer and transfers the ship's ownership. It begins as an old brass watch on a string, serves as compass and key, then disintegrates into a branded symbol over Theo's heart. The later interface is associated with that merger, although the corpus does not separate the watch's contribution from Theo's implant and the Wanderer's systems in every function. (Chapters 2, 6, 10, 82, 172)

History

A compass and key to the Wanderer

Xoreth produces the watch moments before the Earth facility is destroyed, tells Theo that it has served him for countless years, and sets its minute hand toward his old ship. The hand maintains a direction through the building even when it points at a solid wall, leading Theo's group to the concealed Wanderer. The watch fits a circular recess in the ship's door and opens it. Once inside, it floats in a blue beam and presents Theo with the choice to accept ownership of the dimensional ship. (Chapter 2)

Physical artifact becomes an ownership mark

When Theo begins synchronization, the watch breaks into blue sparks and brands a broken circle containing a standing human figure over his heart. The mark darkens rather than fading and remains visibly connected to the Wanderer. Theo's visual interface and damaged implant subsequently provide menus and translation processing, and he describes the implant as having merged with the watch; the precise boundary among implant, mark, and ship intelligence remains unexplained. The mark is still present centuries later and is mistaken by a tattoo specialist for storage magic, confirming that the watch no longer exists as a separate pocket object. (Chapters 2, 6, 10, 82, 172)

Abilities and properties

  • Directed navigation: Xoreth can set the minute hand toward the Wanderer, and the hand indicates a stable direction rather than ordinary time. Whether it can be retargeted after transfer is not shown. (Chapter 2)
  • Access and ownership: The case physically unlocks the ship and triggers its ownership-acceptance and synchronization sequence. It does not merely identify the door; it functions as the access key that begins Theo's bond. (Chapter 2)
  • Interface transformation: Synchronization consumes the physical watch into a permanent chest mark associated with menus, points, ship permissions, and translation. The narrative treats the watch, Theo's implant, and the Wanderer as merged components, so attributing every later system feature to the watch alone would exceed the evidence. (Chapters 2, 6, 10)
  • Irreversibility: No method of extracting, restoring, or transferring the watch after synchronization is documented. Its latest state is the mark/interface, not an intact timepiece. (Chapters 82, 172)
