Biography

Campaign against Deania

James directs Cult operations around Deania, sometimes governing through avatars while committing his main power to the pressure on Tivana's defenses. After Theodore Waltz steals his enormous bag of mind-cultivation resources during the Auqualian battle, James cannot prevent Theo's escape and loses a strategic reserve that strengthens Hearthwood instead. He later confronts Theo outside the capital, hides persuasion magic inside a proposed truce, and accepts a treaty when the spell fails. During the blood-spire crisis he assists the joint defense, but then invades Queen Lyanva's cultivation chamber with the Sunspire King; the newly advanced queen drains and captures both men, keeping James after the reconstruction. Appearance and personality

James is a human man who presents himself with jovial familiarity when negotiation serves him, especially by invoking solidarity among humans. That friendliness is calculated: he laces speech with mind magic, bargains away allied territory, and turns threatening when charm fails. He is nevertheless capable of tactical compromise and participates in the anti-vampire operation after agreeing to a truce. Detailed stable physical features are not consistently supplied. Abilities and cultivation

James is a Sorcerer-level mind cultivator. He creates remote avatars, sustains long-range workings, hides suggestions in ordinary speech, confuses bodily control, uses illusions, and maintains a vast library of mind spells and aura fragments. Dividing power between an avatar and the spell pressuring Deania weakens his immediate combat response; Theo's split attention and mental defenses can detect and reject his persuasion. James also relies heavily on stored talismans and resources, making the theft of his bag a serious practical loss. (Chapters 239–265)

Relationships

  • Theodore Waltz: James alternates between attacking, recruiting, bargaining with, and deceiving Theo. Their clashes give Theo the mind resources used for later advancement. (Chapters 239–265)
  • Tivana: James spends months pressuring Tivana's capital barrier and seeks royal cultivation secrets, making him a direct enemy of her regency. (Chapters 239–268)
  • Queen Lyanva: James expects to exploit Lyanva's vulnerable seclusion but instead becomes vitality for her stabilized Demigod breakthrough and then her prisoner. (Chapters 268–269)

Items

  • Large bag of holding: James carries zeal crystals, poisons, crude iron weapons, hundreds of mind spells and spellhearts, teleportation talismans, and tens of thousands of aura fragments. Theo steals it in Chapter 240 and empties its useful contents into Hearthwood resources; it is not James's current possession. (Chapters 240–242)
