Grotkins
Grotkins is a hobgoblin merchant whose Queenshold trade in supplies and wards develops into direct support for Hearthwood. His commercial magic turns accumulated profit into battlefield force, making the money he seems to value above everything else a resource he is willing to sacrifice when his adopted community is threatened. (Chapters 14, 42, 110, 113, 117)
Biography
Profit spent in defense of a new home
Grotkins first deals with Sava as a supplier, warning that rare death spellhearts are illegal and renting powerful hobgoblin wards for ritual concealment. He also takes the young elf Ishi into his household, giving his mercantile life a family attachment. He eventually evacuates to Hearthwood and continues trading there. During Tim's assault, commerce becomes combat: Grotkins invokes Goldmonger power that consumes gold and profits, drives a yellow corona through True-Mage defenses, and raises seven golden pillars to hold an enemy in place. Each ten seconds costs roughly a year of profit, but the restraint gives allies time to heal Melise and protect the Starfire Crucible. His defining expenditure proves that the merchant's hoard is also a reserve for collective survival. (Chapters 14, 42, 110, 113, 117)
Appearance and personality
Grotkins is a short, thin green hobgoblin with a long hooked nose. He is shrewd, legality-conscious when contraband threatens business, and theatrically protective of profit. His care for Ishi and willingness to burn that profit in battle reveal loyalties stronger than his complaints suggest. (Chapters 14, 42, 113)
Abilities and cultivation
A scan labels Grotkins level 5, though hobgoblin power does not map cleanly onto elven cultivation. His Goldmonger magic converts wealth into a penetrating aura and binding gold pillars strong enough to hinder a True Mage. Hobgoblin wards can conceal rituals even from advanced cultivators. Both arts are resource-dependent: stronger effects consume enormous profit, and the wards must be prepared and rented in advance. (Chapters 14, 42, 113)
