Arwena

Arwena is an aging Ironwood leader and Antgut's former lover. She takes responsibility for a clan destabilized by Antgut's death and reincarnation, supports Hearthwood's defense, and finally refuses an artificial extension of life because she believes the old tribal order should give way to a different future. (Chapters 42–43, 93–94, 101–102)

Biography

Leadership at the end of a life

Arwena succeeds Antgut as the practical head of Ironwood and helps align the tribe with Hearthwood during its defense. By the time Antgut's reincarnated self returns to her, age has left Arwena close to death. Theo offers a route to Mage Acolyte that might extend her life, but she refuses: in her judgment, the era that produced the old chiefs is ending, Theo has already assumed broader leadership, and Ironwood's best future lies in loyalty to that new structure. Her choice turns a personal death into a political transfer rather than a succession struggle. (Chapters 93–94, 101)

Arwena dies and receives a clan funeral. Her soul is placed in Theo's care and taken toward the wisp nursery, leaving open the possibility of reincarnation, but the corpus never shows a new Arwena manifesting. (Chapter 102)

Appearance and personality

Arwena is an elderly elf whose body has become frail and weak by her final meeting with Antgut. She is proud without clinging to office, practical about historical change, and tender enough to recognize the painful discontinuity between her old lover and Antgut's young reincarnation. (Chapter 101)

Abilities and cultivation

Arwena is a Heartwielder nearing its peak but never reaches Mage Acolyte. Her importance lies in governance, alliance-building, and the authority to commit Ironwood to a successor order. Age is an absolute documented limit: she declines enhancement and dies naturally soon afterward. (Chapters 93–94, 101–102)

Relationships

• Chief Antgut: Antgut was Arwena's lover before death. The reincarnated Antgut cares for her, but their changed ages make restoration of the old relationship impossible. (Chapter 101)
• Theodore Waltz: Arwena recognizes Theo's leadership, promises Ironwood loyalty, and entrusts her posthumous future to his wisp nursery. (Chapters 101–102)
