Belle
Belle was an Awakened swordsman whose brief intangibility and supernatural sharpness made him one of the two offensive pillars of Sunny's Antarctic vanguard. A laid-back survivor with a taste for dark jokes, he chose to remain for Falcon Scott's final defense and died in the Winter Beast's cold. (Chapters 821, 830, and 1054–1060)
Biography
Offensive pillar of the cohort
Before Antarctica, Belle survived the destruction of a remote research outpost and crossed roughly five hundred kilometers of hostile wilderness while poisoned air damaged his lungs. That endurance and his precise, sustainable use of an essence-hungry Aspect helped earn him a place in Sunny's cohort. He traveled to Bastion with Kim and Luster, then joined Dorn and Quentin in the melee vanguard. (Chapters 821, 823, and 829–830)
Belle fought with agility and short bursts of lethal force. He phased through attacks, infused his sword with sharpness, mentored a new Sleeper, and defended civilian transports from creatures that reached the convoy. During the beetle attack he used his own intangible body as bait while cutting enemies down, and later survived the Scavenger's blade by phasing his head through the strike. (Chapters 844, 924, 947–948, 1035, and 1041)
The last defense
At the final evacuation, Belle silently declined a place that would have displaced civilians. He returned to the barracks with Dorn and Samara, sharpened his Memory sword out of habit, and told Sunny that staying was their job. His joking manner persisted almost to the end, but his decision was deliberate and shared by the other two Awakened. (Chapters 1054–1057)
The Winter Beast's cold overwhelmed every defense. Belle remained beside his comrades, smiled faintly when Sunny apologized, and was the last of the three to die. Sunny recovered and buried his body after the Beast withdrew; later mentions concern the grave, the cohort's memory, or other people named Belle rather than his survival. (Chapters 1059–1060, 1159, and 1659)
Appearance and personality
Belle is a charismatic man in his late twenties with blond hair, a lean athletic build, and a laid-back expression. He is friendly, daring, and fond of morbid humor, as shown when he welcomes Luster by predicting the younger man will die first. His easy manner does not keep him from handling logistics, mentoring a Sleeper, or accepting responsibility for refugees. (Chapters 821, 823, 830, and 924)
Underneath the jokes is unusual resilience. Belle survives isolation and poisoned air, uses danger with precise economy, and remains calm when offered a chance to abandon the doomed city. His habit of sharpening a sword that does not require sharpening suggests that familiar routines help him face pressure. (Chapters 829, 849, and 1057)
Abilities and Aspect
Intangibility
Belle's unnamed Aspect lets him make his body intangible and phase through solid matter. The state consumes essence too quickly to maintain, so he activates it for fractions of a second to evade a blow or pass through an attack. Representative uses include baiting beetles and letting a lethal blade pass through his head. Timing is essential: prolonged use would exhaust him, and attacks that do not depend on physical contact, such as the Winter Beast's pervasive cold, remain effective. (Chapters 821, 1035, 1041, and 1059)
Supernatural sharpness
His second Ability infuses a weapon with unnatural sharpness, allowing his sword to cut through most obstacles. It shares the first Ability's high essence consumption, which Belle controls through exact, brief activations at the instant of a killing strike. The power magnifies his learned swordsmanship rather than replacing it, and the corpus does not disclose its formal name, maximum target durability, or later progression. (Chapter 821)
Relationships
Sunny and the vanguard
Sunny selects Belle as an offensive pillar, studies his swordsmanship, and repeatedly trusts him with exposed parts of the convoy. Belle follows Quentin's defensive center and complements Dorn's heavier attacks, while mentoring a Sleeper and supporting Luster with irreverent camaraderie. Sunny ultimately regards him as one of “his people,” witnesses his death, and buries him. (Chapters 821, 844, 849, 924, and 1057–1060)
Items
Belle's main possession is a Memory sword used with his sharpness Ability. He also employs a returning throwing hatchet while defending the convoy and receives a cold-protection charm from Sunny before the last battle. None of these items receives a stable catalog name in the supplied corpus. (Chapters 827, 948, and 1057)
