Chi Man

Chi Man is an Ancient Shi prince and disciple of Grand Empyrean Song Tian. Long favored as the likely next emperor, he loses that position when Wang Lin defeats Song Tian and secures the succession for Ji Du, after which Chi Man is titled king and removed from the imperial capital. Biography

Favored candidate on Origin Mountain

Chi Man lives on Origin Mountain close to Song Tian, and court rumor correctly identifies him as the Grand Empyrean's disciple. Their relationship, combined with the reigning emperor's favor, makes the political establishment lean toward Chi Man as successor. His rival Ji Du considers him less intelligent and less cunning but knows that those qualities matter little if Song Tian formally appoints the next emperor. (Chapters 2042 and 2045)

Chi Man seeks reassurance when Wang Lin begins intervening in the succession. Song Tian tells him that concern centers on Grand Empyrean Gu Dao rather than Wang, then attempts to test Wang's newly fused essence body. The test fails so badly that Song Tian activates Origin Mountain's formation specifically to preserve Chi Man's claim, warning that failure will give the throne to Ji Du. Chi Man remains an observer rather than a participant in the resulting Grand Empyrean contest. (Chapters 2045–2052)

Loss of the succession

Wang Lin arrives with Ji Du and defeats Song Tian's formation and law-bearing axe. Song Tian accepts Ji Du as the future emperor. Chi Man initially has no way to resist, then challenges Ji Du's suitability when the latter publicly kneels to Wang as his godfather. The emperor and Song Tian nevertheless accept the outcome, leaving both Chi Man and the crown prince pale and politically isolated. (Chapters 2052–2053)

Five years later, Chi Man is titled king and sent out of the imperial city, formally removing him from the succession. Ji Du later marries a woman descended from Song Tian whom the narration says would otherwise have become Chi Man's wife, underscoring how completely the shift in imperial favor changes his future. (Chapter 2054)

Appearance and personality

Chi Man is a rough-looking young man. He is deferential to Song Tian and concerned about threats to his expected inheritance, but the corpus gives little private reflection beyond hesitation, bitterness, and brief opportunism when Ji Du's public submission appears politically damaging. Abilities and cultivation

• Cultivation under Song Tian: Chi Man is accepted as a Grand Empyrean's disciple and resides at Origin Mountain, but the corpus never states his realm, names a personal technique, or shows him fighting.
