Jazz

Jazz is a talkative Blade Island teacher who attaches himself to Peter during the attempt to rescue Vorden. Peter's group turns Jazz into an unwilling decoy using a disguise soul weapon, after which the island conflict leaves him among the villagers killed during Quinn's uncontrolled Bloodsucker rampage. (Chapters 642–668)

Biography

Teacher, informant, and unwilling decoy

Jazz meets the disguised Peter among replacement Temple teachers and follows him so persistently that Peter cannot investigate freely. His gossip about Vorden's earlier revolt reveals both the Temple's history and that ordinary island residents have feelings despite complying with Hilston's system. When Peter asks for help, Jazz becomes the available source of information about servants and village routines. (Chapters 642–654)

Jazz accidentally discovers the rescue plan, and the group ties him up rather than risk exposure. Peter's item-type soul weapon gives Jazz Vorden's appearance so he can be left as a substitute, but Borden recognises the deception and Jazz repeatedly tries to prove who he really is. He is angry at being used and fears Hilston's punishment, yet he also steers the rescuers away from the Temple and attempts to find Duncan, believing the elder may accept his story. (Chapters 655–665)

Jazz is freed during the confrontation and mocks Vorden's chances rather than joining the escape. Quinn then loses control in Bloodsucker form and kills the island villagers. The later statement that all villagers died establishes Jazz's death even though his individual final blow is not shown. (Chapters 665–668)

Appearance and personality

Jazz is an adult male islander and teacher; the corpus gives no stable physical description before the disguise. He is sociable, intrusive, mischievous, and prone to poorly judged humour, including recalling pranks as proof of identity. He resents being made a decoy but remains more frightened of Hilston and the island authorities than committed to either side's larger cause. (Chapters 642–665)

Ordinary human capabilities

Jazz has no ability-copying power or superhuman strength and is explicitly described as an ordinary person compared with the Blade fighters. He relies on local knowledge, conversation, and attempts at misdirection. The Vorden appearance is imposed by Peter's soul weapon and grants no copied abilities, memories, or identity continuity. (Chapters 655–665)

Jazz can navigate the village and Temple network and knows the residents' habits, but he cannot resist Peter's group physically or survive the later Bloodsucker attack. No weapon specialisation, Qi, or power progression is demonstrated. (Chapters 642–668)

Relationships

• Peter: Jazz follows Peter's disguised role, provides local information, and is then captured and transformed into the rescue plan's decoy. (Chapters 642–659)
• Vorden: Jazz knows Vorden through the Temple's account of his revolt and is forced to wear his appearance. The disguise does not make Jazz a Blade personality or share Vorden's powers. (Chapters 645–665)
• Borden: Borden immediately senses that the disguised Jazz is not Vorden, exposing the substitution and increasing Jazz's panic. (Chapters 657–662)
