Soul-Severing Coin
The soul-severing coin is a descriptive label for the silver spell disc Kael makes for Zorian as an emergency defense against Quatach-Ichl. It carries a touch-range soul-severing effect and achieves one decisive banishment because the lich voluntarily catches it and his own sensitive defenses complete the withdrawal to his phylactery.
History
Kael's anti-lich gamble
Kael explains that a lich's soul is artificially joined to its current body and automatically returns to its phylactery when that connection breaks. Because casting the severing spell directly would require Zorian to touch Quatach-Ichl, Kael embeds it in a small disc so that only the tool has to make contact. During the invasion, Zorian presents the throw as a bribe and correctly bets that the seemingly invulnerable lich will catch it. The instant Quatach-Ichl closes his skeletal hand around the disc, his body collapses and his soul withdraws, removing him from the battle without destroying him permanently. (Chapter 26)
Understanding the lucky victory
Years later, Kael, Xvim, Alanic, Silverlake, Zach, and Zorian analyze why such elementary magic worked on an ancient lich. They conclude that the disc merely caused a small disturbance; Quatach-Ichl's hypersensitive soul defenses interpreted that contact as a possible capture attempt and reflexively sent him back to safety. The tactic therefore depends on surprise and direct contact. Once warned, the lich can deflect the projectile, shield against it, or adjust his defenses, making the original success unsuitable as a repeatable combat plan. (Chapter 80)
Abilities and properties
- The tool is a small silver disc resembling an unusually large coin, but spell formula covers its faces instead of currency imagery. (Chapter 26)
- On direct contact, it disrupts the artificial connection between a lich's soul and physical vessel. A shield impact is insufficient. (Chapter 26)
- Against Quatach-Ichl, the disturbance triggers the lich's own defensive withdrawal to his phylactery. The disc incapacitates the abandoned body but neither destroys the soul nor the phylactery. (Chapters 26 and 80)
- The trick is highly situational: it requires an unshielded hit, loses surprise after one attempt, and can be countered by a prepared soul mage. (Chapter 80)
