Pearl of Aranhal

The Pearl of Aranhal is an unfinished experimental airship built for speed, maneuverability, endurance, and independence from ambient mana. Zorian and Zach repeatedly steal loop copies because the vessel makes it possible to cross the Xlotic desert and the ocean to Blantyrre quickly enough to search for distant components of the Key.

History

The experimental airship

Zorian first studies the protected construction project, acquires technical plans, and prepares the missing components needed for launch. Once Zach can crew the vessel with simulacrums, they infiltrate the site, install the unfinished parts, and seize the ship. A hidden safeguard forces Zorian to destroy part of the engine regulation system to take off, leaving the Pearl damaged as Aranhal and Mezner send pursuit vessels. Its superior speed and maneuverability nevertheless let the thieves survive the aerial battle and escape across the desert. (Chapters 78–79)

The theft is strategic rather than merely acquisitive. Human settlements and teleportation support are too sparse across Xlotic to guarantee a quick route to the Ziggurat of the Sun, while the sea between human lands and Blantyrre makes reaching the imperial staff within a single month nearly impossible by ordinary travel. The Pearl turns both journeys into repeatable operations and also gives Zorian practical access to advanced airship engineering. (Chapter 79)

Voyage to Blantyrre

A later copy carries the expedition from Xlotic past Dragon Island toward Blantyrre. Zorian adds an experimental magical cannon to discourage probing dragons, but the unfinished prototype nearly breaks down several times and poor navigation lengthens the crossing. The ship eventually reaches the continent with only five days left in the restart, prompting the travelers to locate a Bakora Gate that can shorten future journeys. The voyage establishes the route and enables the search that eventually finds the Imperial Staff. (Chapters 84–85)

Abilities and properties

  • Its experimental power core lets the vessel operate independently of ambient mana for long periods, unlike most airships that must follow mana-rich routes. (Chapter 78)
  • The flat, rhombus-like hull resembles a giant leaf. During construction it is painted dazzling pure white without markings, although Aranhal intends the finish to be temporary. (Chapter 79)
  • The design is fast, maneuverable, and unusually robust for an airship; even with damaged engines it can pull away from a larger pursuing vessel. (Chapters 78–79)
  • The unfinished ship normally requires a crew of ten for takeoff and landing. Zorian and Zach substitute simulacrums, technical preparation, and later modifications for the intended crew. (Chapters 78–79)
  • It begins unarmed, and its prototype systems remain vulnerable to breakdown on an intercontinental journey. Zorian later adds an experimental cannon, but the weapon deters dragons rather than injuring them. (Chapters 79 and 85)
