Imperial Crown

The Imperial Crown, also called the Crown of the First Emperor, is an ornate divine artifact worn by Quatach-Ichl. It stores attuned personal mana in a vast fixed reserve, forms one component of the Key, and becomes both the central objective of repeated confrontations with the lich and the payment that removes Oganj from the final battle.

History

The lich's crown

Zorian's marker first identifies the crown on Quatach-Ichl as one of the five Key pieces. When Zach and Zorian later approach him, the lich confirms that the artifact is far more than royal ornament: it stores the wearer's own attuned mana without allowing that mana to lose its personal character. Quatach-Ichl refuses to sell it because its fixed capacity gives him roughly ten times his already exceptional natural reserves, letting him outlast opponents who might otherwise match him for a short exchange. Theft and the completed Key

The boys first gain the crown after taking the imperial dagger with Quatach-Ichl and then turning on him. The Guardian of the Threshold confirms its ordinary storage function and reveals its controller-only ability to grant temporary markers, bringing selected people into the loop for a limited period. In subsequent attempts Zorian and Zach refine the ambush until they can steal the crown early enough to assemble all five artifacts, accepting that an enraged Quatach-Ichl will hunt them afterward. Bargaining power

Zach briefly wears a stolen copy against Quatach-Ichl, reversing the normal contest of endurance, before returning it in exchange for the lich's help with the escape project. In the real battle, Zorian recovers the original crown after an amplified soul attack forces Quatach-Ichl back to his phylactery and Oganj's captured fireball vaporizes the abandoned body. The crown remains untouched and cool amid the molten crater. Zorian then entrusts it to an angel, which promises it and the Imperial Orb to Oganj if the dragon leaves Cyoria for a full day. Abilities and properties

• The crown stores the wearer's attuned personal mana without the energy becoming un-attuned. Its capacity is fixed rather than proportional to the wearer, making its relative benefit especially large for a mage with small natural reserves. (Chapters 81 and 85)
• For Quatach-Ichl, the stored reserve raises his effective mana supply to about ten times its normal size and makes attrition an unreliable strategy while he wears it. Filling the same capacity would take Zorian far longer. (Chapters 81 and 85)
• The controller can use the crown to place temporary markers that admit other people into the time loop. This hidden function is separate from mana storage. (Chapters 85–86)
• The crown survives a dragon-scale magical explosion that melts the surrounding ground and vaporizes Quatach-Ichl's abandoned body. (Chapter 103)
• It is an ornate crown suited to Quatach-Ichl's black-boned, gold-decorated battle silhouette, but its exact metal and gemstones are not known. (Chapters 81, 102–103)
