Defense Cube
The Defense Cube is Zorian's most sophisticated personal protection device, a large metal construct that separates into eight autonomous cubes. It maintains tailored shields, launches stored countermeasures, provides protected flight, and can capture a hostile spell inside a time-dilated pocket for later release.
History
Adaptive protection
Zorian deploys the cube beside the Angel Cube while he is nearly immobilized by the strain of summoning. When Quatach-Ichl's attacks bypass Daimen, the device separates into eight units and surrounds Zorian with a barrier that adapts its maintained spells to each threat. It stops sustained attacks from the lich without drawing on Zorian's mana, protects Daimen inside the same field, and fires spell-bomb marbles to weaken larger projectiles before impact. This autonomy gives Zorian the concentration and time needed to complete the angelic ritual. (Chapter 102)
The array then intercepts Oganj's enormous fireball by enclosing it in a region of slowed time and moving it into a specialized pocket dimension. It later reshapes its barrier into a flying platform for Zorian and his allies, then releases the captured dragon spell at the moment Mrva's soulseizer device incapacitates Quatach-Ichl. The combination forces the lich back to his phylactery and destroys the body he leaves behind. (Chapters 102–103)
The dagger deception
The separate false outcomes experienced by Zach and Jornak depict the Imperial Dagger piercing the array, catastrophically damaging it, and provoking an explosion. The true confrontation is different: the cube bends space to deflect Zach's opening beams, while Zorian avoids Jornak's dagger rather than sacrificing the device. Zorian then traps both men in constructed dream worlds. The destruction belongs to those imposed accounts, leaving the real Defense Cube intact. (Chapters 104–106)
Abilities and properties
- The large reinforced metal cube unfolds into eight smaller orbiting units whose sigils glow and mechanical surfaces rearrange as their configuration changes. (Chapters 102–103)
- Its animated control system continually amplifies or suppresses a large set of maintained protective spells, producing custom defenses with little attention and no mana from Zorian. It resembles a golem more than a passive ward stone. (Chapter 102)
- Each unit carries a pocket dimension packed with marbles containing varied spell bombs. The array launches them to disperse or weaken incoming attacks before the main barrier absorbs the remainder. (Chapter 102)
- The barrier can admit allied attacks from within, flatten into a shielded flying platform, or subtly warp space around its charge to redirect beams. (Chapters 102–103 and 106)
- A ring configuration captures a hostile spell in an extremely slow time pocket and can later release it on a new target. The array must briefly drop its ordinary shield while performing the capture. (Chapters 102–103)
- The Imperial Dagger's alternate divine mode can pierce the cube's shields and reinforced metal in the simulated battle outcomes, identifying a genuine vulnerability even though the real device avoids that strike. (Chapters 104–106)
