Wolud Ranier
Wolud Ranier is a Generasian illusionist and veteran of Baelin's combat classes. He wins an early Grand Battle by combining concealment, observation, and timing, then returns as a graduate student with a more elaborate network of invisible Wizard's Eyes. His later campaign against Alex Roth demonstrates both the sophistication of that system and its vulnerability to creatures that can sense magic. (Chapters 199, 225, 596–604)
Biography
Victory in the Grand Battle
Wolud enters the Grand Battle as a third-year student with two years of Baelin's combat training. Rather than relying on direct force, he remains concealed, communicates from a distance, and uses alliances and observation to outlast competitors. His victory establishes a reputation for practical illusion tactics: controlling what opponents can perceive matters more to his success than defeating them in straightforward exchanges. (Chapters 199, 225, 235)
The anti-Roth alliance
As a graduate student and prospective master illusionist, Wolud joins Otis, Garfield, and John in a coordinated effort against Alex. He maintains ten invisible Wizard's Eyes and real-time viewing screens, penetrates a rolok's invisibility, and supports the alliance through concealment, remote observation, and flight. Alex's celestial foxes smell the magic, destroy the eyes, and follow Wolud through a distant Planar Doorway; the defeat convinces him not to enter another Grand Battle against Alex. (Chapters 596, 603–604)
Appearance and personality
The supplied chapters do not give Wolud a detailed physical description. His conduct is patient, calculating, and competitive: he prefers to watch from safety, build alliances, and preserve an escape route. He can also reassess risk without bravado; after Alex breaks the observation network and pursues him through teleportation, Wolud treats the lesson as decisive rather than demanding an immediate rematch. (Chapters 225, 235, 596–604)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Wolud specializes in invisibility, remote voice projection, Wizard's Eyes, and illusion-linked viewing screens. By his later appearance he can sustain ten hidden eyes, use them for real-time surveillance, see through another creature's invisibility, fly while concealed, and open a Planar Doorway hundreds of feet away. The network remains magical and therefore detectable: Alex's celestial foxes smell and destroy the eyes, disrupting Wolud's information advantage, while superior pursuit negates teleportation as an escape. (Chapters 235, 596, 603–604)
Relationships
- Baelin: Wolud trains in Baelin's combat class and applies its survival-focused lessons in repeated Grand Battles. (Chapters 199, 225)
- Alex Roth: Alex becomes the opponent who exposes the sensory and mobility limits of Wolud's illusion strategy. (Chapters 596, 603–604)
- Otis, Garfield, and John: They form the later anti-Roth alliance that relies on Wolud's observation and concealment. (Chapters 596, 603)
Items
Wolud uses viewing screens linked to his Wizard's Eyes, but the chapters present them as components of his spellwork rather than as an individually named or catalogued item. (Chapters 596, 603)
