Tyris
Tyris Goldtooth is a Generasi battlemage known for lava magic, competitive confidence, and her partnership with the vulcanchelone familiar Vesuvius.
Biography
Rival in the first Grand Battle
Tyris enters the Games of Roal as a third-year student already respected for swordsmanship, earth and fire spellcraft, and earlier Grand Battle results. She diversifies across events because the grand prize rewards broad success, then brings Vesuvius into the Duel by Proxy. Her confident appraisal of Alex Roth is reciprocal rather than dismissive: each recognizes the other as a serious obstacle, and her gentle treatment of Vesuvius shows that the immense familiar is a companion rather than a disposable contest piece. (Chapters 199–217)
Alex and Claygon narrowly defeat Tyris and Vesuvius in their first proxy match, giving her a personal reason to pursue a rematch without turning the rivalry hostile. In the Grand Battle she uses invisibility, lava, and coordinated allies to bury Claygon, eliminate much of Alex’s team, and secure first place for her own. Alex manages to take her out during the exchange, while Isolde’s survival preserves third place for the cabal. The result establishes Tyris as both rival and peer: she wins the larger contest, but learns that Alex’s group remains dangerous even when cornered. (Chapters 218–244)
Wizard and recurring competitor
Tyris joins the Research Castle expedition because her combat experience can protect surveyors while advancing the study of Thameland. Her team recovers a chitterer corpse and reports where the scout attacked; in a later assault, she and Vesuvius hold a hill against blood-draks and chitterers with lava, ice, force, flame, and summons until reinforcements arrive. The work turns tournament ability into public defense and brings her into recurring cooperation with people she once planned chiefly to defeat. (Chapters 260–286)
Her competitive identity remains, but it gains perspective through real casualties. Tyris is relaxed, sharp-tongued, and openly enjoys a clean fight, yet she worries about people like Carey and Merzhin sacrificing all other parts of life to the Ravener war. She continues university and expedition work while treating survival as a condition for enjoying ambition rather than proof of cowardice. That outlook explains why she can seek a rematch with Alex while still distinguishing sport from battles that leave friends dead. (Chapters 286–547)
Return to the Games
Now in her first year of graduate school, Tyris returns to the Games, welcomes Claygon’s sapience and strength, banters with Alex, and anticipates another Vesuvius rematch. A disguised Professor Ram and his construct Prime defeat her in the semifinal before it can occur. Her disappointment is mixed with honest respect, and she immediately warns Alex that the unfamiliar construct is exceptionally dangerous. Losing does not make her disown Vesuvius or invent excuses; it demonstrates that her pride can accommodate evidence when an opponent earns victory. (Chapters 585–589)
In the Grand Battle, Tyris studies how Alex teleports Claygon and Grimloch into fights, then organizes multiple rival teams around a trap aimed at his mobility. The ambush briefly strips Alex of his staff and encases Claygon, proving her tactical reading sound, but the cabal’s hidden resources overturn the plan. She had promised only a chance rather than certain victory, and the encounter leaves their rivalry grounded in mutual knowledge: she understands the cabal’s coordination, while they must account for her ability to make competitors act together. (Chapters 602–603)
Alliance before the final war
As Ravener attacks intensify, Tyris spends more time in Thameland and fights beside the Heroes and Generasi’s Watchers. She and Vesuvius defend the pass to Llanesam, provide the platform on which Merzhin treats the catastrophically injured Alex and Theresa, and continue supporting settlements while the search for Kelda’s sanctum proceeds. Competitive fire becomes coalition service, though her anger at the hidden church and Ravener remains personal after seeing what their attacks do to people she knows. (Chapters 720–824)
During the final escalation, Tyris helps destroy Ravener-spawn, raises an alarm when a new threat approaches, and joins the defense moving across Thameland. When the strike force prepares to enter the fae wild and the Ravener’s underground lair, she decides to remain outside: stronger specialists are available, and Vesuvius may not fit the tunnels. The choice shows judgment rather than retreat. She directs her considerable power where it can operate effectively, then survives to celebrate with Hart after the war. (Chapters 838–851 and 906)
Appearance and personality
Tyris is a red-haired woman with green eyes and a gold tooth that flashes when she grins. She carries herself with open confidence, set shoulders, and smooth movement, sometimes relaxing with her feet up while picking her teeth with a golden toothpick or smoking a pipe. Her vivid red hair and forceful presence make her easy to recognize across repeated competitions. (Chapters 199–218 and 260)
She is ambitious, competitive, practical, and fond of teasing. Tyris enjoys victory and does not hide a taste for powerful magic or battle, but she respects opponents who prove themselves and cares deeply for Vesuvius and vulnerable colleagues. Her later decision to stay out of terrain unsuited to her familiar shows that confidence does not prevent an accurate assessment of limits. (Chapters 199–906)
Magic, abilities, and skills
The corpus establishes Tyris as an accomplished battlemage and graduate student but does not state a formal spell-tier advancement. Her largest effects often combine her own casting with Vesuvius’s familiar abilities.
Earth, fire, and lava magic
Tyris specializes in earth and fire, combining them into lava she can launch, redirect, or use to reshape a battlefield. She buries golems in molten rock, closes escape routes, and floods enemy formations; cooling spells from allies can then harden the lava into restraints. Vesuvius also generates lava, so the pair can sustain pressure from two linked sources. The effects consume substantial mana and are less suitable around allies, delicate objectives, or enclosed tunnels. (Chapters 199–244 and 602–603)
Her broader battle repertoire includes fire, stone, ice, force, flight, and elemental summoning. She can attack from Vesuvius’s back or cast while flying independently, mixing effects to counter different bodies and defenses. The narrative shows this versatility in expeditions and war without giving exact mechanics for every named or unnamed spell, so their demonstrated applications are clearer than her full limits. (Chapters 260–286 and 720–851)
Familiar bond with Vesuvius
Vesuvius is a volcano tortoise of enormous mass who breathes fire, erupts lava, withstands heavy attacks, and can serve as a mobile platform. As his familiar master, Tyris casts through him and coordinates his body with her own spells. Their bond began before the Games and is visibly affectionate; she strokes and praises him, panics when he is injured, and never treats a loss as grounds to discard him. His size and power are advantages in open battle but serious restrictions in narrow passages and stealth operations. (Chapters 214–218, 260–286, and 720–851)
Swordsmanship and tactics
Tyris is described as an excellent swordswoman as well as a spellcaster, although the corpus gives more representative evidence for her magic than for a named blade. Her tactical strength is better documented: she studies recurring opponents, uses terrain and concealment, coordinates mixed teams, and targets mobility and command before trying to destroy the cabal’s heaviest fighters. Her plans can fail when opponents reveal resources she could not observe, but they force even stronger groups to respond rather than simply overpower her. (Chapters 199 and 235–244 and 602–603)
