Tobias Jay is Thameland’s high priest during the final Ravener cycle. His sincere devotion makes him an unwitting instrument of the hidden church’s campaign against the Fool, but learning Uldar’s betrayal eventually leads him to redirect the nation’s faith toward the Traveller.

Tobias joins King Athelstan’s first negotiation with Generasi as a proud defender of Uldar and the Heroes. He accepts Greymoor’s material benefits but resists outside supervision of the divine struggle, while the secret Apostles note that they can work around him without his knowledge. His institutional confidence helps leave the hidden order unexamined; later evidence about controlled dungeon cores therefore threatens not only doctrine but the authority through which Tobias understands the war. (Chapters 188–189 and 268–365)

An Open Seat to Chaos in the Wild and Order in the Material

Manipulated reports persuade Tobias that Alex must be compelled to serve as Fool, and he supports the royal demand before confronting him at Rockmoot. Generasi refuses, and the hidden church’s attack exposes the conflict beneath official faith. Once Tobias learns Uldar is dead and treacherous, he carefully introduces the Traveller to the army, presents the General as part of a divine plan, and secretly redirects mass prayer toward her. Hannah answers in person, empowers the priests, and sends them into Ussex’s battle; afterward Tobias helps transfer public worship to the Traveller while managing the dangerous truth of Uldar’s death. Appearance and personality

Tobias is an older, tall human man with narrow dagger-like features, unusually small eyes, pristine white robes, and a platinum chain bearing Uldar’s symbol. Years of politics and high office make him authoritative, formal, and capable of concealment, but his faith is not merely ambition. Hannah’s appearance reconnects him with the love and wonder that led him into the clergy before manoeuvring and war hardened him. (Chapters 188–189, 665–690, and 877–901)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Tobias channels divinity through prayer, ritual, sacred sites, and collective faith. Before the final battle he works miracles from Ussex’s cathedral; after redirecting nearly one hundred priests’ prayers, Hannah appears, empowers them with radiant nimbi, and teleports them into battle. Tobias then raises his hands and divine flame ruptures Ravener-spawn, burns marrow to ash, and destroys dozens. The decisive power is granted by the Traveller and amplified through gathered worship, not established as Tobias’s unaided reserve. (Chapters 830 and 877–895)

He can also project his voice across the capital through a miracle and organise national religious messaging. These abilities depend on faith, followers, and divine relationship, and his earlier devotion does not grant accurate knowledge of Uldar’s motives. His latest role combines miracle-working with institutional reform, using carefully managed ceremonies to prevent collapse while moving Thameland toward the Traveller. (Chapters 812–901)
