Roderich
Roderich is a member of the Hydra Companions who recruits promising battlemages and approaches the Grand Battle through alliances, scouting, and caution.
Biography
Recruiting and competing in the Grand Battle
Roderich approaches Alex Roth before the Games because the Companions monitor students who survive Baelin's combat course. He offers Alex's whole group a place on the Hydra team, presenting shared opposition to the Ursa-Lupines as leverage, but Alex rejects what he hears as an invitation to betray his friends. Roderich nevertheless later maintains a nonaggression pact with Alex's team during the Grand Battle. After both groups take losses, he exchanges intelligence while concealing the Hydras' weakness, directs them toward caves where fighting was heard, and withdraws without breaking the pact. (Chapters 199–232)
Appearance and personality
Roderich is a young man with a cool smile and a rough voice compared to a growling wolf. His friendliness can feel calculated or slightly off, and he prefers to preserve leverage rather than admit vulnerability. Even so, he honours the demonstrated pact when an exhausted team might have been tempting prey, showing practical restraint alongside his ambition. (Chapters 199 and 232)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Roderich is presented as a Hydra Companion and Grand Battle competitor who can travel with his team's airborne formation. His clearest demonstrated skills are recruitment, intelligence gathering, threat assessment, and negotiation under tension. The source does not isolate a spell cast by him or identify his magical specialty, so the flight and other group effects cannot safely be attributed to his personal spellcraft. (Chapters 199–232)
