Nua-Oge
Nua-Oge is a selachar wizard and Grimloch’s elder sister. Her tactical ice and darkwater magic complements his physical power, while her practical judgment repeatedly keeps her formidable younger brother connected to the group around him.
Biography
Lessons and Gods to The Heroes Go Forth
Nua-Oge enters Baelin’s course with stealth, tactical movement, and a mixed entourage, then proposes using low-mana allies to herd vent-drinkers toward waiting spellcasters. In later Barrens work she protects herself and Grimloch from the dry heat with Shield of Darkwater, coordinates ice attacks against the xyrthak, and tries to restrain her brother when his appetite or aggression threatens the plan. The partnership teaches her to use Grimloch as an ally without surrendering responsibility for his welfare or choices. (Chapters 45–168 and 190–285)
The Ghosts of Faith and Gods to Five Birthdays and a Funeral
Nua-Oge remains the social bridge between Grimloch and their old classmates, bringing food to the Festival, a conch-shell housewarming charm to Alex’s family, and friends to the Roth bakery. She also teaches Kybas Shield of Darkwater, allowing the goblin to adapt her protective water-and-shadow sheath for Harmless during a tournament. These choices extend her influence beyond her own fights: her spell and patient caretaking strengthen two other unconventional partnerships. (Chapters 402–653)
The Final Meeting of COMB-1000 to The Circle
Nua-Oge arrives at the final class reunion surrounded by a large, proud selachar family and graduates with distinction. Even while Grimloch prepares for the final assault, his warning that she would avenge him shows how central their sibling bond remains to his sense of consequence. She survives the war and joins the former combat class at Alex and Theresa’s wedding, retaining the communal role she built throughout university. (Chapters 829–905)
Appearance and personality
Nua-Oge is a female selachar, a shark-associated people adapted to water and poorly suited to the Barrens’ heat and dryness. She is courteous, tactical, generous, and strongly protective of her younger brother, though controlling his appetite often leaves her exasperated. Her concern extends beyond family: she rushes to dead vent-drinkers after an accidental freezing and regularly organises gifts, food, and introductions among friends. (Chapters 45–168 and 402–606)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Nua-Oge casts ice magic for restraint and ranged attack, including solid ice projectiles. Her signature Shield of Darkwater wraps a target in dense water and shadow, protecting aquatic bodies from heat and dehydration and providing a defensive layer against attacks. It can be cast on herself or another person, but it is a maintained magical protection rather than proof that the recipient can naturally tolerate dry terrain. (Chapters 76–168 and 243–251)
She combines spellcasting with planning and an entourage’s nonmagical strengths. Her vent-drinker strategy uses placement and herding to conserve mana; against the xyrthak she slows the target with ice while Grimloch and other warriors pin it. The approach is effective but not flawless: ice can kill fragile creatures if applied too far, and major battles still require coordinated allies rather than her magic alone. (Chapters 57–61 and 134–168)
