Leopold
Leopold Richter is a highly educated Generasian wizard and a friend of Amir, Donovan, and Ursula. Childhood trauma inflicted by a deity-backed cult turns his distrust of priests into fanaticism, and he helps the conspirators whose demon attack on the Games kills civilians. After confessing, he is convicted and executed by disintegration. (Chapters 223, 243–248)
Biography
Conspiracy, confession, and execution
Leopold initially appears as an affable graduate who moderates his friends' angry discussion of priests, but his later confession reveals a harder conviction. After cultists destroyed his childhood community, he came to believe Generasi could be protected only by excluding divine institutions. He joins the conspiracy, maintains a close bond with an abyssal knight, and accepts mass violence as a means to that end. Capture exposes the cost of that choice: he pleads for Amir, admits his part, and is convicted of treason, mass death, and abuse of wizardry before being erased. (Chapters 223, 243–248)
Appearance and personality
Leopold is heavy-set and broad-smiled, with an approachable manner that initially softens his friends' hostility. He is intelligent and highly educated, but trauma has hardened into ideological certainty. His concern for Amir and his bond with an abyssal knight show genuine attachment, while his willingness to expose uninvolved people to slaughter shows how completely fanaticism overrides that attachment's moral limits. (Chapters 223, 245)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Leopold is a trained wizard and demon summoner with a particularly strong relational bond to an abyssal knight. Earlier in life, he rescued Amir from cultists by drugging their water and summoning demons, demonstrating planning and some alchemical competence. The chapters do not assign him a formal spell tier. Once captured, spell-disruption restraints and a potion neutralize his magic, and his education cannot compensate for the strategic blindness produced by his anti-priest obsession. (Chapters 245–248)
Relationships
- Amir: Leopold once rescued Amir and later begs that his friend be spared, making Amir the clearest surviving object of his loyalty. (Chapter 245)
- Donovan and Ursula: They belong to his Generasian social circle and share the discussions surrounding priests and deities. (Chapter 223)
- Abyssal knight: Leopold formed a strong summoner's relationship with the demon, which Baelin considers potentially valuable for research despite Leopold's crimes. (Chapter 245)
