Hogarth

Hogarth is a veteran Rhinean guard who serves Isolde alongside Svenia. His compact strength and blunt humour accompany a protective commitment that carries him from Baelin's student exercises into the hidden church battle and the last defence of Greymoor.

Biography

Terrain and Entourages to Enchantment and Dodging Questions

Hogarth arrives in Baelin's class as Isolde's attendant, heavily armed despite being neither a conventional student nor a wizard. Exercises near a mana vent and in the Barrens require him to work under Isolde's direction, capture rather than merely kill, and endure hazards that disrupt magical members of the group. He accepts those pressures because guarding Isolde means understanding the environments and allies that will shape her education. (Chapters 57–80)

The Ghosts of Faith and Gods to Five Birthdays and a Funeral

At the Research Castle, Hogarth balances soldierly readiness with irreverence, insisting his equipment is already polished while Svenia urges more preparation. When danger emerges beneath them, he takes her hand, readies himself, and fights beside her with burning oil and close weapons. Later, both guards stay with Isolde against Uldar's servants even while bleeding badly; their inability to match divine opponents never becomes an excuse to abandon their charge. (Chapters 404–418 and 603–653)

Return to Celebration

Hogarth helps Isolde face graduation and memories of Derek, apologising that the guards could not protect her from betrayal and affirming that her newer friends possess the honour Derek lacked. He promises to stand beside her in the coming war, then does so by helping defend Greymoor's tunnels until the Ravener dies. His survival allows the old duty to continue into peace, now openly grounded in affection as much as household service. (Chapters 810–906)

Appearance and personality

Hogarth is a short, very broad human man built like a boulder. Scars mark a face largely hidden by a thick, wild black beard, and he wears armour suited to a professional guard. He is blunt, sardonic, loyal, and attentive beneath his jokes; his instinct is to meet fear with practical action, though miracles and divine revelations can still leave him speechless. (Chapters 57, 404–417, and 881)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Hogarth is not shown using spellcraft. He carries a heavy crossbow, broad-bladed sword, and polearm, and is trained to protect a spellcaster by holding cover, attacking threats that penetrate her range, and coordinating with another guard. He and Svenia improvise with lantern oil and torches against spear-flies, while later rapid bow fire supports Isolde from fortified positions. His limits are mortal: divine soldiers outclass and seriously wound him, and he depends on armour, positioning, and allied magic against supernatural forces. (Chapters 57–80, 415–418, and 603–653)

His most persistent skill is protective judgment. Hogarth knows when a social problem is beyond force, when Isolde needs encouragement rather than another guard, and when loyalty requires following her into battles she can now survive more easily than he can. Years beside Svenia give them a reliable paired formation, but neither claims their vigilance can prevent every emotional or magical harm. (Chapters 404, 828–833, and 895–906)
