Negotiations in the Hall of Magic to New Frontiers of Fortune

Hobb receives Alex Roth, Theresa Lu, and Selina Roth at registration, arranging study, auditing, and housing through an exacting but ultimately helpful process. When Alex later seeks financial and academic guidance, Hobb explains options while handling multiple documents and conversations at once. He openly identifies himself as a devil and frames bargains as serious structures, establishing a relationship in which Alex distrusts infernal danger but repeatedly relies on the registrar’s institutional knowledge. The Secrets of the Stars to Finally Free

Hobb’s protective pact becomes decisive at Rockmoot when Thameish authorities try to seize Alex. He places himself between student and priest, declares that divine law has no authority over Generasian regulations, and freezes nearly one hundred attackers and their blessed missiles with spoken commands. Later, after acknowledging that he cannot guard every place at once, he joins Greymoor’s defence, does unspeakable damage to Ravener-spawn, witnesses Hannah’s return, and remains on the line through the Ravener’s destruction. Appearance and personality

Hobb is a blue-skinned, horned devil with red eyes, meticulously pressed clothes, and a large monocle. He is controlled, calculating, and unfailingly attentive to ledgers, signatures, and contractual language, while taking impish pleasure in alarming students with jokes. His politeness becomes cold menace when someone threatens the university’s obligations, but he does not claim omnipresence or pretend that his protection prevents every loss. Magic, abilities, and skills

Hobb casts ordinary wizard magic such as multiple Wizard’s Hands while writing separate documents at high speed, but his most striking power is devilish command. At Rockmoot the single word “Halt” arrests moving divine missiles and every attacker who launched them; “Fall” strips the volley’s momentum and drops the immobilised soldiers. The effect demonstrates immense battlefield control, though the corpus does not provide a complete ruleset or establish that he can command any target without condition. (Chapters 68–69 and 688–690)

His binding pact with Baelin is also a functional limitation: Hobb acts as registrar to protect enrolled students and the integrity of university law, explaining his intervention for Alex and his later defence of university property at Greymoor. He cannot be everywhere at once, arrives at the final battlefield only after settling other affairs, and remains strongest when a threat falls within the obligations he can enforce.
