Gwyllain is an asrai fae whom Alex's group rescues from a blue annis hag and who repeatedly repays that rescue with information.

Biography

The Prisoner to Extermination by Army

Alex Roth finds Gwyllain caged in a hag's den and accepts his given name as a gesture of reciprocal trust. Gwyllain has lived around Greymoor for roughly a century and offers information rather than combat: after the group frees him, he declares a debt and promises to locate an aeld tree. Months of searching finally lead him to a distressed sapling near an abandoned windmill. He warns Alex that monsters were reported nearby, guides him there through the night, and remains beside him when the report proves to be an ambush by Ravener-spawn and hags. The rescued branch later becomes Alex's staff. (Chapters 266–463)

Pain to The Unmaker

Gwyllain's earlier warning about the Guide becomes crucial after the hidden church ambushes Alex. He had explained that the ancient fae's names might carry traps or connections, leading Alex and his allies to avoid speaking them casually and later to suspect name-based tracking. Gwyllain does not participate in the counterattack, and the exact tracking mechanism remains unknown, but his caution helps the cabal understand how the Stalker repeatedly finds its quarry. Wording and Pacts to Chaos in the Wild and Order in the Material

As discussion turns to fae gates and the Ravener's access to Och Fir Nog, Alex remembers that Gwyllain could appear near the Research Castle without a permanent gate. The observation supports a distinction between innate fae travel and what Ravener-spawn can do, but does not prove that Gwyllain aided the Ravener. His established choices remain warning, guiding, and keeping clear of powers likely to kill him. (Chapter 845)

After Aenflynn and much of his court die, Gwyllain returns to a shattered Och Fir Nog and makes a deliberate bid for independence. He and companions loot abandoned mansions, palaces, and castles before rival claimants can secure them, then hides the resulting fortune and lives quietly. When he meets Alex again, he offers honey-wine, information from the fae wild, and a future alliance in exchange for protection. The once-caged asrai ends as a self-described “asrai of means,” preparing to fund a competent future leader rather than submit to the surviving kinglings. (Chapters 900–901)

Appearance and personality

Gwyllain is a small, green-scaled asrai with large eyes, long expressive ears, and quick movements. After the war he wears a robe of leaves, vines, flowers, and moonlight, rings of precious metal and holly, and an enormous jewel-studded hat with butterfly-wing brims. (Chapters 266–267 and 900)

He is cautious, talkative, transactional, and capable of brave choices when obligation or opportunity outweighs fear. Gwyllain complains about danger and looks for escape routes, yet spends months fulfilling a self-imposed debt, warns stronger people of threats, and later turns political collapse into both wealth and a plan for influence. Magic, abilities, and skills

Fae paths and concealment

Gwyllain travels through faerie paths, emerging from hills, walls, or nearby wilderness without using ordinary roads. He can slip past the Research Castle's guards, sentries, and magical defences to reach Alex, although he remains wary that unfamiliar wards might detect him. The corpus does not establish the full range of this travel or whether he can carry others. (Chapters 337–338)

Fae knowledge and information gathering

He knows local creatures, old sites, fae customs, dangerous names, and the social networks through which pixies and bluecaps spread news. That knowledge lets him find the aeld sapling and summon the Stalker with an ancient sign. Information often arrives second- or third-hand and can omit crucial details, as the vague “monsters” report does, so his intelligence requires verification. (Chapters 337–424 and 719–752)

Survival and opportunism

Gwyllain survives captivity, battlefield proximity, Aenflynn's rule, and the collapse of Och Fir Nog by reading stronger actors and choosing when to hide, bargain, or move first. His postwar fortune comes from planning and speed rather than a demonstrated combat spell. (Chapters 266–424 and 900–901)
