Ezaliel
Ezaliel is an ancient abyssal knight who rules a hellish domain and extends his influence through summoners, cultists, and greater-demon lieutenants. His assault on Generasi makes him Baelin’s personal enemy and ultimately brings permanent destruction upon him.
Biography
The Prey that Fights to To the Future
Ezaliel first answers Leopold’s life-debt summons to delay Baelin, accepting the risk only after declaring the old obligation fully paid. He escapes capture and later directs cultists and demons to seek dungeon cores, hoping to exploit their value in the hells. Baelin answers the attack with a campaign against Ezaliel’s domain while Alex Roth’s party infiltrates Cretalikon for information. Exhausted after his allies fall, Ezaliel tries to flee and then bargain; Baelin captures him, fractures his crystalline body, and uses the Hungry Light of Darukesh to consume his essence until he crumbles to sand. (Chapters 241–323, 345–442, and 479–790)
Celebration to Generals and Legacy (Final Chapter of Mark of the Fool + Afterward)
Ezaliel does not return in the postwar chapters. At the wedding, Isolde invokes his name only as an example of a dead enemy incapable of keeping her away. The apparent resurrection in the afterward occurs inside Alex’s nightmare alongside other defeated threats, and Alex wakes immediately afterward. His latest factual state therefore remains permanent death, while his final narrative function is the memory of a danger the survivors have outlived. (Chapters 906–907)
Appearance and personality
Ezaliel is nearly ten feet high and wide, shaped like a perfectly cut living diamond with thirty rhombic faces. Disturbing coloured lights move within him, and trapped faces later scream from his crystalline facets. He is cautious about capture, exact about debts, proud of his ancient station, and remorseless toward those harmed by his agents. Even when exhausted and afraid, he resists surrender until escape is impossible. (Chapters 241–247 and 540–545)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Ezaliel can transform his crystalline body into a ray of light to move at extreme speed, fire curving beams with varied magical effects, form prismatic shields, split those shields into defensive wing-like structures, and launch storms of crystal shards. His facets manipulate and refract light and magic, giving him a broad offensive array. Baelin can nevertheless redirect his beams, restrain his movement, and exhaust his mana, showing that these defences are powerful rather than absolute. (Chapters 241–243)
As an abyssal knight, Ezaliel rules a domain, sustains cults and servants across planes, and ordinarily would reconstitute there if merely killed elsewhere. Permanent destruction requires attacking his essence in his own sphere: the Hungry Light enters his reflective body, repeatedly consumes his soul through its internal reflections, and erases the trapped faces and his power before his body becomes sand. (Chapters 241–247 and 540–546)
