Derek

Derek Warren is a Generasi student whose cheating destroys his relationship with Isolde and nearly damages her academic career.

Biography

Welcome Home to The First Battle for the Fool

Derek first appears trying to prevent Isolde from ending their relationship after she learns that he repeatedly cheated on her, cheated at games, skipped class, and copied her potion work word for word. Forced to confess before Professor Jules's class, he withdraws from the next potion course and repeats the first-year sequence. He nevertheless enters Baelin's combat course in armour, where his early defeat breaks his group's formation and eliminates them from the test. In potions, he watches other students' notes and shows less practical mastery than his repeated coursework should provide, leaving Alex determined not to become another source he can exploit. (Chapters 28–64)

Derek later joins the Ursa-Lupine Brotherhood and appears leaner, more disciplined, and better integrated into a serious battle-mage organisation. Alex cannot establish whether he has truly stopped cheating, but the brotherhood's academic and combat expectations make some improvement plausible, while Isolde hears that a demonic attack shakes him and that he struggles again in third year. His presence at the Games motivates Isolde to compete, yet the narrative keeps the emphasis on her recovery rather than granting Derek a clear redemption. (Chapters 160–251 and 328–680)

Preparations for Graduation to Celebration

Derek's later role is retrospective rather than active. As graduation approaches, Isolde remembers him as her first serious romantic partner and identifies his selfish choices—not her own capacity for love—as the source of the harm. At Alex and Theresa's wedding, she describes him as barely a distant memory while thanking the friends who helped her build a better life. The contrast supplies his final consequence: whatever became of Derek, he no longer defines Isolde's relationships or future, and the corpus does not establish his own post-university status. (Chapters 828 and 906)

Appearance and personality

Derek is a red-haired young man, initially presented as anxious, sweaty, and sleep-deprived after his misconduct is exposed. Later he has shorter hair, a leaner and harder build, more graceful movement, and the exhausted look of someone under greater academic and martial pressure. (Chapters 28–39 and 190–196)

His early behaviour is selfish, evasive, and entitled: he presses Isolde for another chance, copies her work without consent, and seeks shortcuts instead of learning safely. Later association with the Ursa-Lupine Brotherhood suggests more discipline, but the narrative does not provide his perspective or a direct confession of change, so a full reform remains unconfirmed. (Chapters 28–64 and 190–251)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Potion study and wizardry

Derek studies potion-craft at Generasi but is required to repeat introductory work after plagiarism. In the repeated laboratory course he changes a potion solution more slowly than classmates despite prior exposure, a practical sign that copied assignments did not give him reliable mastery. No formal spell tier or named potion breakthrough is established for him. (Chapters 32 and 47–64)

Combat training

Derek carries a longsword and initially wears chainmail to Baelin's combat test, though the armour is poorly suited to the Barrens heat and he falls first during an ambush. His later acceptance into the Ursa-Lupine Brotherhood indicates that he develops enough martial and academic competence to meet its standards. The corpus does not show a named spell or decisive victory that would define the limits of that improvement. (Chapters 39–47 and 190–251)

Relationships

  • Isolde: Former partner whose trust and academic standing Derek violates by infidelity and plagiarism; she eventually reduces him to a distant memory.
  • Professor Jules: Potions professor who exposes his plagiarism, requires a public acknowledgement, and makes him repeat the course.
  • Alex Roth: Classmate who watches Derek cautiously and avoids giving him access to work he might copy.

Items

  • Longsword and chainmail: Battle equipment Derek brings to Baelin's first test; the armour becomes a liability in the Barrens heat, and neither item is identified as magical.
