Celsus

Celsus is an elven mercenary hired for the Research Castle expedition. His hatred of demon masters, earned through prior encounters in the Hells, makes the contract personally satisfying as well as profitable. He becomes one of the expedition's hardest front-line fighters and dies while attacking Yantrahpretaye after his armour is driven inward. (Chapters 512, 516, 527–528)

Biography

Research Castle contract and death

Celsus joins the expedition for pay and for revenge against demon masters, speaking with clipped practicality about the danger ahead. Baelin marks him as part of the contracted force, and Celsus serves as a reserve defender near the portal before smashing through demons with his mace. In the final battle he keeps fighting through explosions and wounds that would stop an ordinary soldier, but Yantrahpretaye's attack crushes his spiked armour into his body. Claygon retrieves the corpse, and the party returns it for cremation and dispersal of the ashes across realms. (Chapters 512, 515–516, 527–543)

Appearance and personality

Celsus is a tall, imposing elf with ghost-white skin, no hair or eyebrows, and large gold eyes flecked with red. He wears heavy armour and speaks precisely, showing a mercenary's direct concern with terms and survival. His hatred of demon masters is personal and intense, while his conduct in battle is relentlessly aggressive even after the odds turn fatal. (Chapters 512, 527–528)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Celsus fights with a mace, heavy armour, exceptional strength, and extraordinary endurance. He pulps demons, resists their attacks, remains functional after being thrown into an ally, and continues striking after armour spikes pierce him. He also has sharp hearing and is not overcome by the expedition's mania effect.
