Bubbles
Bubbles is a young small water elemental repeatedly summoned by Alex Roth. A practical experiment in potion delivery becomes an affectionate long-term bond, and Bubbles serves as both a combat companion and an emblem of Alex’s love of summoning.
Biography
Elemental Experiments to Iron, Smoke and Flame
Bubbles first answers Alex’s experimental summoning and, after hesitating, shares a name that Alex renders as “Bubbles” in return for the promise of more potions. Alex discovers that the elemental can hold potions within its watery body, inject them through skin, and combine that delivery with a water elemental’s ability to add or extract water. Bubbles willingly drinks the offered mixtures, then proves the method in battle by smothering a Ravener-spawn’s head, injecting a sleeping potion, and attacking through its mouth and nose. (Chapters 278–296)
Bubbles becomes a recurring member of Alex’s summoned forces rather than a disposable test subject. The elemental follows instructions to water plants, douse Claygon’s flames, carry sleeping mixtures, and fight alongside other summons. During a fire, Alex carries Bubbles through dangerous heat while Bubbles directs streams of water at the burning windmill, demonstrating the partnership’s usefulness outside combat as well as the trust built through repeated summons and rewards. (Chapters 339–376 and 418–527)
Fifth to Skills Outside Spellcraft
Years later, Alex still summons Bubbles while studying higher-tier magic and describes new creatures as potential companions like the little elemental. Bubbles responds to his exhaustion by gently misting his face, a small act that shows care beyond following a tactical order. After Alex removes the Mark of the Fool, Bubbles is among the first witnesses to his transformed spellcasting, accepting a potion delivered by teleportation as he tests how quickly the Traveller’s power now lets him summon and cast. (Chapters 661–664 and 741–744)
Bubbles has grown physically by this reunion, and Alex remarks that the elemental may soon require a second-tier spell rather than the first-tier spell that originally called it. The story does not formalise that growth as a completed magical rank, and the summoning’s ordinary limit remains: when the spell’s duration ends, Bubbles is pulled back to the elemental plane. Its latest bodily appearance ends with that return home. (Chapters 741–744)
Appearance and personality
Bubbles is a small, clear water elemental whose body rolls and sloshes rather than walking. Initially described as apparently young, it communicates in bubbles and burbles, delights in potions, and approaches Alex with playful affection. It is cooperative and brave in danger, but its friendliness does not make its combat methods gentle. By Chapter 741 it is visibly larger than before. (Chapters 278–296, 339, 663, and 741)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Bubbles can contain liquids and potions within its body, carry them through defences that counter gas, and inject them into a living target. Like other water elementals, it can add or extract bodily water; in combat it combines those mechanics with engulfing, drowning, and entry through a target’s airways. It can also project water to extinguish flames, mist a person, and water living plants. Its effects depend partly on what potion Alex supplies and on the instructions it receives. (Chapters 278, 293–296, 339, and 346)
Bubbles is summoned through Summon Small Water Elemental, originally a first-tier spell. It does not remain permanently in the material world: the spell eventually returns it to its home plane, and Alex must summon it again for later work. Its growth suggests the original spell may cease to be sufficient, but the corpus does not show a completed transition to a greater elemental form or grant Bubbles independent spellcasting. (Chapters 278–279, 741, and 744)
