Birger — Mark of the Fool

Birger is an elderly Kymilander firbolg, father of Bjorgrund, and former ally of Kelda McCallum. His protective wards hide his son from rune-marked hunters, while his hospitality and hard-earned trust help Alex's group uncover Kelda's legacy.

Biography

Firbolgs in the Forest to Celebration

Birger shelters Bjorgrund in an isolated cottage because rune-marked warbands periodically receive divine directions to seize his son. His wards conceal them but are neither permanent nor inexhaustible, and local resentment grows whenever attackers menace the neighbouring village. When Alex Roth, Theresa, Brutus, and Claygon arrive seeking Kelda, Birger tests their intentions over food before asking for help against the latest warband. Their defence ends the immediate hunt and turns guarded hospitality into alliance. (Chapters 700–705)

Birger then supports the search for Kelda's moving sanctum and shares what he knows of his vanished friend. The journey also exposes the cost of protecting his son: he had lost a lower leg saving Bjorgrund and lived with the injury for years. After Merzhin's Mark evolves, Birger freely accepts an offered miracle; his restored leg lets him walk, dance, and fight again, and he promises that both he and Bjorgrund will repay the aid. (Chapters 719–821)

In the final campaign, Birger fights Ravener-spawn with sling stones and defensive wards but accepts that Bjorgrund's divine axe makes the younger giant better suited to the strike team. Remaining behind is an act of difficult trust rather than cowardice: he protects soldiers while his son enters the greatest danger. Hannah answers his prayer during Greymoor's defence, and Birger recognises the spawn's collapse as proof that the younger generation succeeded. He later sings at Alex and Theresa's wedding and celebrates his restored mobility with an acrobatic dance. (Chapters 838–906)

Appearance and personality

Birger is an immense, grey-bearded firbolg of advanced age. He initially has only one full leg and uses a crutch, but Merzhin regenerates the missing lower limb. His deep voice suits both conversation and powerful song. Birger is wary, hospitable, proud, protective, and irreverently exuberant once trust is earned; concern for Bjorgrund can make him stubborn, but he ultimately respects his son's adulthood. Magic, abilities, and skills

Birger practises protective wardcraft capable of hiding Bjorgrund from rune-marked detection and shielding a home or settlement. The wards require preparation and continuing strength, can be probed or breached, and do not stop the hostile god from periodically revealing their approximate location. During the final war Alex assigns Birger to ward Welling because this defensive specialty is more useful around an army than inside the Ravener's close tunnels. (Chapters 703–705 and 842–851)

As a firbolg, Birger has great size and strength even in old age. He hunts, throws or slings magically glowing stones hard enough to break Ravener-spawn skulls, and fights from behind stronger front-line warriors. His old injury limits mobility until Merzhin restores the leg; afterward he can dance, leap, and backflip, but the text still distinguishes him from Bjorgrund's rune-enhanced close-combat power. Birger is also a skilled singer whose voice harmonises with Claygon at Alex and Theresa's wedding. Song is presented as an art and source of communal morale rather than a separate magical attack. His knowledge of Kelda, the northern wilderness, and old conflicts makes him a valuable guide, though secrecy and centuries of danger leave gaps he cannot fill for Alex.
