Julius Schneider

Julius Schneider is the sole full Admiral of the Bundesritter Navy, commander of its Central Armada, and a veteran who has maintained Zyphran's maritime dominance for more than four decades. His rare Umbra constitution and magic-interfering stigmata make him a complete battlefield combatant, but encounters with Franz Barielle Aetherion, Margaret Illenia, and Vanitas Astrea break his undefeated record and force him to seek help beyond Zyphran. (Chapters 254–260, 283–286, 309, and 323)

Biography

Role in the Supplied Story

Julius enters the Iron Lotus crisis after ordinary containment has failed and all of Zyphran's senior naval commanders are summoned. Unlike Iridelle Vermillion's status as a Great Power or Roman Neuschwan's low-casualty strategy, Julius's authority rests on four decades of veteran command and a record without defeat. He receives Franz and Vanitas as foreign reinforcements, leads the next naval charge after thousands die under the initial advance, and later suspends their planned executions because killing the only people able to locate the leyline would endanger the operation. That decision places continental survival above political hostility without making him trust either man. (Chapters 254–260)

After the Iron Lotus disappears, Julius disputes Franz's handling of Aetherion and becomes entangled in a preemptive attack against the emperor and Vanitas. Franz's proliferating bodies kill Bundesritter personnel faster than Julius can contain them, while Margaret severs the shadow magic meant to eliminate her. Their duel reveals that Julius was a close friend and former sparring partner of Margaret's father, Dante, and had secretly funded her education after Illenia fell as an act of atonement for failing the kingdom. He still refuses to abandon the operation, but Margaret cuts through his final barrier and spares his life; the surviving Vanitas then makes Julius understand that neither military judgment nor personal concern gives him authority over her choice. (Chapters 283–286)

That defeat changes Julius's strategic posture. When Vanitas later seizes Aetherion's throne, Julius warns Zyphran that direct confrontation is suicide and openly describes the man he saw as no longer human. His fear does not make him entirely passive: when the coalition proceeds, Julius reaches across twenty-three years of isolation to request aid from an old contact in the Umbral Coalition. By Chapter 323 he remains alive and at the planning table, humiliated by an opponent for whom he cannot imagine a reliable death condition but still assembling resources beyond conventional national alliances. (Chapters 309 and 323)

Appearance and personality

Julius is a tall figure who wears a white admiral's uniform and carries a staff. His presence draws immediate attention from officers, and decades of service mark him as an older veteran, though the corpus does not establish a stable hair color, eye color, exact age, or fuller facial description. During the duel with Margaret, blood stains his uniform and a long cut crosses his torso without immediately threatening his life. (Chapters 254–255 and 285–286)

He is disciplined, severe, and largely uninterested in glory. Julius can acknowledge indispensable expertise, delay punishment when survival requires cooperation, and treat foreign rulers with professional courtesy. His private history shows quieter loyalty: he supports Margaret's education without seeking credit and tries to spare her even while fighting her. The collapse of his undefeated certainty produces visible fear around Vanitas, but also enough humility to ask an isolated foreign power for assistance when familiar methods no longer offer a credible plan. (Chapters 254–260, 285–286, 309, and 323)

Magic and abilities

Julius possesses a rare Umbra constitution that lets him create, shape, and move through shadows as extensions of his will. He forms spikes, enclosing waves, barriers, and close-range weapons; can dissolve his figure into shadow to reposition; and maintains pressure from multiple directions without leaving a conventional mage's openings. His strikes rival a Dullahan's force, while magical enhancement bridges distance, mobility, and speed well enough for him to duel Margaret at sword range. The breadth makes him an all-rounder rather than a fragile ranged caster, but attacks remain severable by Margaret's concept-cutting blade. (Chapters 284–286)

His stigmata operates beneath completed spell forms by grasping the particles that compose magic. Within its range Julius can strengthen his own attacks and disrupt, alter, or bend other spells, turning the surrounding battlefield into a controlled domain with few ordinary blind spots. The exact radius, mana cost, activation duration, and interaction with non-magical phenomena are not stated. Franz supplies a direct systemic counter: destroying or containing one clone does not matter when an unknown number remain elsewhere, forcing Julius to spend control on targets whose loss produces no lasting reduction in the enemy. (Chapter 284)

Julius can also impose large-scale environmental control through his staff; striking it orders a room into sudden cold and signals the massed Bundesritter response. The text identifies Karina Maeril, already among the navy's foremost ice mages, as a candidate to succeed him, but does not clarify whether the temperature change is Aqua magic, an artifact effect, or an application of his particle manipulation. His latest demonstrated combat state is diminished but intact: Margaret's cut bypasses the foundation of his shadow barrier and wounds him, yet he survives, retains command, and later contributes strategic warnings and diplomacy rather than displaying a new spell. (Chapters 254, 286, 309, and 323)

Relationships

  • Margaret Illenia: Julius knew Margaret as a child through his friendship with her father, encouraged her identity as a knight, and secretly supported her education after Illenia's fall. Their reunion becomes a duel because he targets Vanitas; Margaret surpasses his defenses but spares him, leaving their personal history unresolved. (Chapters 284–286)
  • Vanitas Astrea: Julius initially treats Vanitas as a dangerous but necessary expert, suspending his execution during the Iron Lotus operation. Their later encounter convinces Julius that Vanitas exceeds even Archmage comparisons, and his inability to imagine a reliable victory shapes Zyphran's coalition debate. (Chapters 255–260, 286, 309, and 323)
  • Franz Barielle Aetherion: Julius receives Franz as an allied emperor and later challenges his rule and military conduct. Franz's virtually uncountable clones turn Julius's normally dominant battlefield control into attrition without a meaningful target. (Chapters 255 and 283–284)
  • Roman Neuschwan: Julius and Roman share senior naval authority but specialize differently. Julius commands the Central Armada through veteran power, while Roman's Western Fleet is known for tactical casualty reduction; Julius introduces Roman to the Aetherion delegation and coordinates the broader front. (Chapters 254–260)
  • Iridelle Vermillion: Iridelle is the navy's Great Power and a possible source of raw force beyond Julius's own title. After both experience Vanitas's superiority, Julius urges avoidance while Iridelle argues that fear must be converted into another attempt, pushing the admiral back toward the coalition. (Chapters 254–260 and 309)
