Sun Brooch
The Sun Brooch, also called Midsummer, is a dark-gold sunbird brooch bought by Klein Moretti. It supplies a compact set of Sun-pathway purification, light, and enhancement powers, while making its bearer feel trapped in oppressive summer heat.
History
Purchase and testing
At Eye of Wisdom's gathering, Klein pays 2,000 pounds for the brooch after hearing its powers and drawback. Its broad answers to undead, possession, fear, and corruption fill an important gap in his equipment, but the psychological heat is immediate enough that he stores it above the gray fog or in a sealed container when it is not needed. He verifies that the sensation is not ordinary physical heat and learns that spirituality cannot seal it away. (Chapters 344–345, 349, and 351)
Purification in the field
Klein combines the brooch with weapons, bullets, Air Bullets, and his other mystical items. Its passive aura weakens undead before he attacks, while Holy Light, Fire of Light, and Cleave of Purification provide direct counters to evil and death-aligned creatures. He also lets allies use it when their missions require that domain, including temporary loans during the Bansy operation and later to Danitz. (Chapters 363, 377–382, 489, 511–513, and 893)
Retained reserve
As Klein's level rises, the brooch becomes less central but remains useful because he does not always possess equivalent purification powers. He keeps it rather than selling it and can lend it or use it as a source for recorded powers. Its last inventory assessment still treats it as a retained, functioning item; no later transfer or destruction is established. (Chapters 632, 656, 803, 957, and 987)
Abilities and properties
- While carried, it produces a warm, pure aura over roughly ten meters. Weak undead may evaporate, stronger ones are weakened, and the bearer gains resistance to possession and corruption. The effect is continuous rather than selectively aimed. (Chapters 344–345)
- Holy Light Summoning calls down purifying light after about two seconds of spiritual activation. Fire of Light and Cleave of Purification provide burning and cutting attacks especially effective against evil or undead targets. (Chapters 344–345, 379, and 511–513)
- Holy Water Creation requires about five seconds and the ancient Hermes word for “Sun.” Horror Immunity suppresses fear, while Holy Oath temporarily improves strength and agility and adds fire and holy damage. (Chapters 344–345)
- Sun Halo strengthens courage and helps purify evil influences among allies within about twenty meters. The brooch's light can also enhance bullets, cane strikes, and Air Bullets rather than acting only as a standalone spell. (Chapters 345, 363, and 382)
- Its powers can be observed and recorded by items such as Leymano's Travels, though a recorded version follows that notebook's own limits and is not permanent access to the brooch. (Chapter 803)
- The bearer experiences severe, accumulating summer heat and irritability. This is a mental or perceptual side effect that cannot be blocked by a spirituality seal; prolonged discomfort can destabilize judgment and raise the danger of losing control. (Chapters 344–345 and 351)
- The false warmth is dangerous in true cold: it encourages the body to open its pores without actually protecting against low temperature, worsening exposure. Storing the brooch away removes the active burden. (Chapters 458 and 695)
