Fallen Mercury
Fallen Mercury is a pewter-black, sentient dirk named by Aurore Lee and claimed by Lumian Lee in the dream ruins of Cordu. Its Sequence 5 Fate Appropriator power lets it steal and exchange discrete portions of fate, but its hostility, short remaining life, and exacting contact rules make every use dangerous.
History
The blacksmith's weapon
Lumian recovers the abnormally long dirk after defeating the corrupted blacksmith in the dream ruins. The apparent blacksmith is only its controlled puppet: the blade had taken his will after cutting him and turned him into a zombie-like servant. Aurore identifies the weapon's fate-related nature and gives it the name Fallen Mercury. Lumian avoids bare contact, wraps it securely, and relies on the higher-level corruption sealed within him to suppress its attempts to act independently. (Chapters 1518 and 1522–1524)
Exchanging calamities
Lumian learns to read the mercury-like river of fate around a wounded target and to select a fragment by prying the matching symbol with the blade. He uses stored misfortunes and violent endings as delayed weapons, including the fate associated with the Montsouris ghost. The dirk is not a simple curse projector: it must first hold an eligible fate, draw blood from a recipient, and complete an exchange whose duration rises with the fate's weight. Its limited lifespan and accumulating cracks make heavy exchanges increasingly risky. (Chapters 1527–1558, 1655–1668, and 1688)
The last exchange
During the confrontation with Susanna Mattise and the Tree of Shadow, Fallen Mercury is pushed beyond its damaged condition and shatters. Destruction does not cancel its pending operation. Instead, it breaks through the usual delay and forces the stored fate directly onto Susanna, killing her and completing the weapon's final exchange. A later comparison to Lumian's own fate powers does not indicate that the dirk was restored. (Chapters 1688–1692 and 2135)
Abilities and properties
- The cold blade can seize control of a living being after contact and bloodshed, stripping will and turning the victim into a puppet. Covering it and avoiding skin or blood contact prevents casual activation. (Chapters 1522–1524)
- It displays a target's life as a mercury-like river divided into symbols and fragments. The wielder selects a fragment by prying the corresponding symbol with the blade. Looking at its heretical patterns can itself cause dizziness. (Chapters 1518 and 1523–1524)
- If it holds no stored fate, it must completely kill a target to appropriate one portion. It can store only one fragment at a time, and while it is appropriating fate it cannot continue harming that target normally. (Chapters 1523–1524 and 1528)
- To bestow the stored fragment, the blade must wound and draw blood from the recipient. The exchange then continues for a period determined by the fate's importance; removing the weapon, releasing it, or losing an intermediary does not necessarily stop an exchange already underway. (Chapters 1528, 1554, and 1657)
- Exceptionally weighty or central fates may be impossible to select, take too long, or crack the weapon. The user also has only a brief opportunity to choose among visible fragments. (Chapters 1554–1558 and 1657)
- The dirk is intelligent and malicious. Lumian controls it through a stronger Inevitability-related corruption rather than ordinary ownership, and even that suppression does not remove the need for wrapping and caution. (Chapters 1522–1524)
- Its original remaining life was already limited and damage reduced the estimate from roughly half a year to only months. Its final destruction accelerates rather than aborts the fate then being exchanged. (Chapters 1657–1661 and 1692)
