Death Knell

Death Knell is an iron-black revolver whose three supernatural firing modes expose weaknesses, make wounds lethal, or turn bullets into wide-area attacks. Klein buys it in Bayam and makes it one of Gehrman Sparrow's signature weapons, despite the thirst and temporary weaknesses it imposes.

The arms dealer Ukfa introduces the weapon and demonstrates its rules before selling it to Klein for 9,000 pounds. Klein judges that its varied modes and compatibility with special ammunition suit a hunter who prepares different answers for different enemies. (Chapters 707–708)

Gehrman Sparrow's sidearm

Klein repeatedly uses Death Knell's Lethal mode in assassinations and supernatural battles. It helps kill Mr. X, fires stronger special bullets when Klein can afford and safely make them, and delivers a Control Spirit Bullet against Amon's Worm of Time. Klein's fear of darkness after one activation illustrates that the gun's weakness penalty is operational rather than merely theoretical. (Chapters 726–729, 781, 987, and 1006)

The Staff of the Stars later reenacts the image of Death Knell firing a Control Spirit Bullet. That manifestation is a reproduced phenomenon, not evidence that the physical revolver changed owners. The corpus records no destruction or later transfer of the original. (Chapter 1236)

Abilities and properties

• Weakness attack: after the user injects spirituality and pulls the trigger, the shot finds a target's mystical weakness and gains extraordinary accuracy and damage. The gun reveals or exploits a weakness rather than guaranteeing a kill against every defense. (Chapter 708)
• Lethal: cocking the hammer causes any hit to count as striking a weak point. A true weak-point hit can be fatal, although sturdy defenses can survive; three shots within five seconds are described as enough to kill a Guardian. (Chapters 708 and 781)
• Slaughtering: investing more than twice the normal spirituality converts a shot into a grapeshot-like area attack. Combining Slaughtering with Lethal costs more than three times the spirituality and places a heavy burden on the wielder. (Chapter 708)
• It accepts special Beyonder bullets, whose stronger effects improve its tactical range but make ammunition expensive, rare, and dangerous to craft. (Chapters 708, 987, and 1006)
• Carrying it produces persistent thirst. Each use creates or magnifies a personal weakness for six hours, with demonstrated examples including irrational fear of darkness; the exact weakness is not reliably predictable. (Chapters 708 and 729)
