Blue Avenger

The Blue Avenger is Alger Wilson's sentient ghost ship and the vessel most closely tied to his life at sea. It can sail and fight with a very small crew, but its own will makes it a partner that must be watched rather than an inert possession.

History

Captaincy and Church service

Alger chooses continued captaincy of the Blue Avenger when weighing his future in the Church of Storms, preserving the independence and access to the sea needed for his private advancement. The Church can still recall both captain and ship to Pasu, and the vessel serves through Alger's missions and the later war. Even while under institutional authority, it remains identified with him and provides the mobile base from which he conducts Tarot Club work. (Chapters 41, 294, 782–783, and 1135)

Return to the open sea

After Klein enters his sleep, Alger receives the old-fashioned three-masted ghost ship again and departs with its crew. The restored captaincy accompanies his rise within the Church and ultimately his position as pontiff. Its supernatural navigation and low manpower requirements make it especially suited to voyages into dangerous waters where an ordinary ship would need a much larger complement. The Tudor-linked treasury

In the later expedition connected to Alista Tudor's legacy, the Blue Avenger carries a silver full-length mirror that opens onto a dangerous treasury. The chamber holds Hunter-pathway artifacts and a Weather Warlock characteristic, while its hazards damage the deck and force the ship's consciousness to keep repairing itself. The vessel crosses the Fog Sea despite being understaffed. When the remote mirror connection finally cracks, the characteristic escapes and converges elsewhere, but the ship itself survives. Abilities and properties

• As a ghost ship, it can sail at night with only a handful of crew. One person must nevertheless remain on watch because the ship may deliberately seek trouble or steer into danger of its own accord. (Chapters 782–783)
• Its consciousness can respond to damage and attempt self-repair, including when supernatural pressure from the Tudor-linked treasury cracks or deforms its deck. Repair is not instantaneous and does not make the hull invulnerable. (Chapters 2468 and 2498–2505)
• Alger can perceive through the vessel, gaining additional vision beyond his own line of sight. (Chapter 1163)
• Its cannons can aim and fire automatically under the captain's command, reducing the crew required for combat. (Chapter 1228)
• It remains a seagoing vessel rather than unrestricted teleportation: the Fog Sea and similar routes still require navigation, time, and an experienced captain, and the ship can be placed at risk by what it carries. (Chapters 2494–2514)
• The silver-mirror treasury used aboard it is a later cargo or linked space, not clearly an innate organ of the ship. The loss of the Weather Warlock characteristic therefore does not establish that the Blue Avenger itself lost a native power. (Chapters 2468 and 2513–2514)
