Biological Poison Bottle

The Biological Poison Bottle is a brown, translucent bottle that continuously releases randomly selected toxins when opened. Klein Moretti takes it from Wraith Steve and uses its slow, indiscriminate poisoning to weaken enemies and shape battlefields, while managing a separate illness-inducing effect that harms whoever carries it.

History

Steve's weapon and Klein's spoil

Steve opens the bottle during the battle with Sharron, Maric, and Klein, explaining that its poison becomes effective in under a minute and may become unavoidable after four minutes of exposure. After Steve dies, Sharron retrieves the bottle and throws it to Klein, who closes its attached cap and seals it in a metal box without touching it directly. Divination shows that it was produced by a disastrous experiment: an experimenter combines many poisons and spiritual ingredients, adds his blood, and is dragged into the cauldron before the completed bottle remains. (Chapters 349–350 and 368)

Poison as preparation

Klein learns that opening the bottle is most effective in an enclosed area and that time, not immediate damage, is its main weapon. During the Capim operation, he uses the developing symptoms to weaken Harras's group and mask the smell of leaking gas before an explosion. In Kalvetua's ruins, he throws the open bottle into a half-submerged hall and waits until the old priest's coughing creates an opening for purification attacks. His Spirit Body state can avoid ordinary poisoning, but living allies and bystanders cannot. (Chapters 379–382, 414, and 546–549)

A dangerous item that never sells

Klein keeps the bottle sealed, boxed, stored above the gray fog, or packed away when not needed. Even closed and behind a spirituality wall, prolonged possession leaves him weak and ill, especially after spiritual exhaustion. He repeatedly offers it for sale, including for 5,200 pounds, but its indiscriminate effects and experimental potential deter buyers. At its latest physical inventory appearance, it remains unsold and in his possession. (Chapters 351–352, 489, 640, 734–746, and 987)

Abilities and properties

  • Removing the cap causes poison to spread gradually through the surroundings. The toxin applied to each target is random and cannot be selected by the wielder. Demonstrated symptoms include coughing, breathlessness, pain, abnormal emotion or behavior, and potentially death. (Chapters 349, 351, and 379)
  • Effects begin within roughly one minute and worsen with continued exposure. Steve states that after four minutes in the contaminated environment some outcomes become unavoidable, but the exact range is never established. (Chapters 349 and 351)
  • Because it acts slowly, alert Beyonders can flee, seek the source, or counterattack before becoming incapacitated. Enclosed spaces, distraction, and other hazards make it far more effective. (Chapters 379–382 and 414)
  • Immersing the bottle in water turns the liquid amber; drinking the prepared liquid in advance is revealed as a way to prevent poisoning. The necessary immersion time is not quantified, so this countermeasure carries uncertainty in urgent use. (Chapter 351)
  • Spirit Bodies are not affected by ordinary biological poison, allowing Klein to operate near the open bottle while incorporeal. This does not protect his later living body from the separate carrying drawback. (Chapters 351 and 394)
  • Merely carrying the capped bottle gradually weakens the possessor and causes illness, potentially becoming fatal with enough time. A spirituality seal does not stop this negative effect; physical separation and limiting exposure do. (Chapters 351–352 and 640)
  • Its poisons affect friend and foe indiscriminately. The item is therefore best treated as a prepared environmental hazard, not a precise single-target weapon. (Chapters 349, 379, and 745)
