Wendel

Wendel is an MI9 operative whose investigation of the impossible town of Utopia makes him a witness in its manufactured murder case. The earlier phrase “Wendel Street” is a place-name and not this character's appearance. (Chapters 29 and 1330–1331)

Biography

Life in Klein's Era

Wendel entered Utopia during official travel, encountered a murder, and calmly assessed the scene rather than fleeing from violence. After leaving, he reported the town to MI9, but Utopian police officer Biles reached him in Backlund with a subpoena, prompting Xio Derecha to keep him inside headquarters for protection and observation. (Chapters 1330–1337)

As the court date approached, insomnia and fear wore down Wendel, yet concern that avoiding testimony might condemn an innocent woman changed his decision. He declared his willingness to testify and passed through a washroom door back into Utopia, where Biles praised his kindness; before the trial, Utopia dissolved and Wendel awoke in MI9 headquarters with the subpoena still in his pocket. (Chapters 1342–1354)

Xio later reported that Wendel had returned the same night and never reached court. Klein Moretti instructed her to tell him that Utopia's people had died in a natural disaster, ending the immediate threat while leaving his supernatural experience unexplained to him. (Chapter 1366)

Appearance and personality

Wendel wears a top hat and travels with a suitcase. Professional experience makes him calm around an apparent murder, but incomprehensible supernatural pressure causes severe anxiety; despite that fear, empathy for the accused ultimately leads him to choose testimony. (Chapters 1330–1333 and 1342–1344)

Pathways and abilities

Wendel is an MI9 field operative familiar with homicide and covert signaling, but the corpus does not establish his pathway, sequence, or a supernatural personal ability. He cannot resist Utopia's relocation effect and depends on MI9 protection. (Chapters 1331–1337 and 1342–1354)

Relationships

Xio Derecha is the MI9 colonel overseeing Wendel's protection and report. Biles summons him as a witness and recognizes the kindness behind his eventual choice, while Klein Moretti, as Utopia's creator, indirectly controls the ordeal and its end. (Chapters 1336–1344 and 1366)

Items
