Valentine

Valentine is a Purifier of the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun and one of the three official investigators sent to Cordu. A Sequence 7 Solar High Priest, he specializes in light, holy flame, purification, and limited treatment of corruption. His strict faith initially makes him quick to condemn both evil and people who appear insufficiently devout, but his work with Lumian Lee gradually complicates that judgment.

Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Valentine arrives in Cordu with Ryan and Leah after Lumian's warning reaches the authorities. When told that the village is trapped in a loop and riddled with cult activity, his first instinct is to report immediately even at the cost of his own life. Ryan persuades him that an immediate telegram could alert the enemy and destroy their chance to learn more. Valentine then accepts Lumian and Aurore Lee as temporary partners, using purification on suspected contamination and fighting beside them against Pualis de Roquefort's servants. His Holy Light and flames suppress undead manifestations, but the team discovers that Cordu's layered corruption exceeds what three mid-Sequence investigators can safely resolve. His faith creates both resolve and a blind spot. Valentine is outraged that villagers abandon the Eternal Blazing Sun, while Aurore privately recognizes that poverty, clerical abuse, and tangible benefits from the cult have shaped their choice. Lumian pushes him to investigate those causes rather than only condemn the result, and Valentine seriously considers the proposal. At the same time, his warmth toward Lumian becomes genuine: a casual solar greeting convinces him that the youth remains a believer, and he offers to introduce Lumian to a bishop. This personal trust survives the catastrophe even though the authorities later list Lumian as a wanted criminal. (Chapters 1514, 1524, and 1530–1539)

In Trier, Valentine continues as a Purifier under Angoulême. He helps investigate Hugues Artois, recruits Jenna as an official informant with Imre, exchanges information about the Deep Valley Cloister and Hostel, and works within a team rather than insisting that every wild Beyonder is an enemy. When he finally learns that Ciel is Lumian, he connects the wanted criminal to the boy who helped investigate Cordu. Jenna's account of Lumian preventing a greater catastrophe leaves him relieved rather than eager to arrest him; Valentine calls him a devout believer pushed into darkness, while Angoulême describes heroism outside the light. Appearance and personality

Valentine is in his late twenties, with powdered blond hair and piercing blue eyes. At Cordu he wears a white vest, blue tweed jacket, and black trousers, with enough care that he appears dressed for an important appointment. His chilly expression and refusal to look at the tavern's farmers underline his early distance from village life. (Chapter 1433)

He is intensely devout, dutiful, courageous, and initially rigid. He is willing to sacrifice himself to obey reporting rules and repeatedly frames corruption as something to purify. That severity does not erase kindness: he offers cleansing because he believes Lumian may be in danger, remembers his wife and children when the loop is explained, cooperates when Ryan sets a safer plan, and forms a lasting favorable judgment of Lumian. His later investigative work shows greater willingness to use informants and distinguish illegal status from moral character. (Chapters 1494–1495, 1508, 1524, 1729, and 1931)

Pathways and abilities

Aurore identifies Valentine as a Sequence 7 Solar High Priest of the Sun pathway because he displays Holy Light Summoning, Holy Water Creation, and Sun Halo but no confirmed Sequence 6 Notary ability. His earlier pathway stages are Bard and Light Suppliant; advancement retains and strengthens their light, support, and anti-corruption functions. The corpus does not confirm a later promotion, so Sequence 7 remains his latest demonstrated rank. (Chapter 1514)

Holy Light, holy flame, and Sun Halo

Valentine can stretch out his arms and summon a blinding pillar of Holy Light onto a target. Against Pualis's servant, the strike burns and evaporates an manifested body while dispelling nearby transparent faces. He can also fill an area with illusory golden flames that resemble sunlight. Those flames destroy ghostly faces, pressure undead entities, illuminate an occult environment, and help Ryan confine a mobile opponent. Sun Halo provides a continuing solar influence rather than a single strike. (Chapters 1499, 1514, and 1537)

These powers are especially effective against undead, evil spirits, and energies categorized as corrupt or evil, but they are not absolute. An enemy can evade through invisibility or environmental movement, and Valentine's attacks work best when Ryan limits the target's options. A deeply altered victim may be damaged along with the corruption: Valentine warns that purification could destroy a person if the abnormal power has become inseparable from the body. Sun powers therefore classify and burn; they do not automatically restore every victim to a healthy original state. (Chapters 1499 and 1530)

Holy Water Creation and purification

Valentine can create drops of Sun Holy Water and apply them to a person suspected of contamination. The effect exorcizes evil spirits and purifies evil power within a target, which is why Lumian fears another full-body treatment after becoming a Dancer: the sealed power in him might react violently. Valentine does not force the issue when Lumian declines, showing that the technique can be used diagnostically and therapeutically but still requires judgment about what is inside the patient. Holy Water has strict limits. It causes Lumian pain when it contacts the sealed corruption, and it cannot reverse Ryan and Leah's completed transformations in Cordu. Purification may remove only part of an influence, fail against a stronger or integrated state, or injure the host. Valentine himself can also be burned, exhausted, or physically harmed while operating near hostile divine forces; Sun affiliation is not immunity to other pathways or to the consequence of overmatching his Sequence. Faith and professional skills

Valentine's Sun pathway reinforces religious expression and gives his invocations a strongly devotional form, but his tactical decisions are learned official procedure. He conducts surveillance, follows Ryan's command, evaluates reports, coordinates with other pathways, and later handles informant work under Angoulême. His fervor can strengthen resolve and make him resistant to intimidation, yet it can also narrow his social judgment, as seen when he initially interprets wavering faith without considering poverty or clerical abuse. Relationships

• Lumian Lee: Initially a suspicious local guide, later a trusted collaborator whom Valentine considers a genuine believer. Learning that Lumian became the wanted Ciel produces regret and relief rather than simple hostility.
• Ryan: The practical leader of the Cordu investigation team. Ryan tempers Valentine's self-sacrificial rigidity and creates openings for his solar attacks.
• Leah: Fellow investigator whose divination and mobility complement Valentine's direct purification. Together they accept Lumian's loop evidence and investigate the village.
• Aurore Lee: A knowledgeable wild Beyonder whose analysis identifies Valentine's Sequence and whose private perspective exposes the social limits of his religious certainty.
• Pualis de Roquefort: A central source of Cordu's death- and birth-related abnormalities. Valentine fights her servants and condemns her cult, but his mid-Sequence purification cannot resolve her entire domain.
