Susie
Susie is Audrey Hall's golden retriever, fellow Spectator-pathway Beyonder, and eventual therapeutic partner. Her transformation begins as an accident—she drinks the remaining liquid from Audrey's potion preparation—but her advancement is not merely an extension of Audrey's. Susie digests potions through her own observation, protects the Hall family for years, treats Lumian Lee, and reaches Sequence 4 Manipulator while continuing to define herself, with some exasperation, as “just a dog.”
Biography
Role in the Central Conflict
Susie enters the Hall household as a beloved golden retriever of uncertain pedigree. While Audrey prepares her first Spectator potion, Susie opens the laboratory door and licks the last silver liquid from broken cups; the residue is enough to make her a second Spectator. Audrey initially treats this as a frightening accident, then recognizes a partner. Susie keeps watch during rituals, observes servants and visitors who disregard a dog, learns Loenese words, and develops speech by vibrating the air. She digests the Spectator potion without formal instruction because openly watching people is already natural to her. Audrey consequently spends resources on Susie's Telepathist and Psychiatrist potions, but Susie's fast digestion comes from her own unobtrusive access to the manor's emotional life. (Chapters 8, 41, 61–64, 92, 112, 295, 418, and 613)
As her intelligence and rank grow, Susie stops being merely Audrey's student. She evaluates the sincerity of psychology teachers, relays political and domestic conversations, warns Audrey of danger, and becomes someone capable of noticing the observer herself. That reciprocal scrutiny matters: Audrey is surrounded by people whom her powers can read, while Susie can question her assumptions from inside the same pathway. Susie advances through Hypnotist and Dreamwalker while remaining outside the Tarot Club's formal seats, and she spends the years of The Fool's slumber protecting the Hall family rather than pursuing public status. Her canine presence, once useful because society ignored it, becomes a chosen form of loyalty. (Chapters 310, 356, 613, 1055, 1189, 1320, and 2550–2551)
Susie's treatment of Lumian demonstrates an independent professional ethic. She meets him under Psychological Invisibility, reads thoughts only until he expresses discomfort, and apologizes rather than claiming clinical entitlement. In therapy she uses questions, dream interpretation, and carefully paced confrontation to approach his memories of Cordu and Aurore Lee. When his subconscious resists, she does not tear the barrier down; she warns that forced recall could intensify self-destruction and instead helps him reconnect with grief, friendship, and his will to live. Audrey secretly assists because the case is beyond Susie's confidence, but Susie conducts the sessions and openly admits the help when Lumian mistakes her for the high-ranking companion. The result is stabilization, not a magical erasure of trauma. (Chapters 1559–1561 and 1632–1634)
By the final crisis Susie is explicitly a Sequence 4 Manipulator. She traverses the sea of collective subconscious with Audrey, returns with her to the Hall home, and carries years of experience protecting people who once saw her only as a pet. During the apocalypse Audrey assigns her to remain in the collective sea and “placate,” a task suited to containing panic and psychic collapse on a vast scale. Susie's resigned response that she is only a dog preserves the joke that has accompanied every promotion, but her decision to remain makes that modest identity a form of courage rather than a denial of power. (Chapters 2550–2551 and 2595)
Appearance and personality
Susie is a large golden retriever with thick golden fur and an expressive canine face. She is not a purebred show animal, a fact irrelevant to the Hall family's affection for her. Potion advancement sometimes reveals mind-dragon traits beneath the familiar exterior: vertical pupils and dark-gold scales form below her fur. In later years she wears gold-rimmed glasses and can project a gentle, professionally reassuring presence without ceasing to look like a dog. (Chapters 8, 41, 613, and 2550–2551)
She is observant, discreet, sincere, and more grounded than many human Beyonders. Susie enjoys meat and biscuits, learns reading and mysticism seriously, and repeatedly invokes being a dog when a human expectation becomes absurd. The phrase also guards her sense of self along a pathway that can turn identities into instruments. She respects patients' limits, admits uncertainty, and remains loyal to Audrey and the Hall family without becoming servile. Her humor is often understated and resigned, particularly when increasingly divine responsibilities are placed on a golden retriever. (Chapters 112, 295, 356, 613, 1559–1634, and 2595)
Pathways and abilities
Susie follows the Spectator pathway through Sequence 9 Spectator, Sequence 8 Telepathist, Sequence 7 Psychiatrist, Sequence 6 Hypnotist, Sequence 5 Dreamwalker, and Sequence 4 Manipulator. The progression moves from observation and communication into treatment, suggestion, dream travel, and group-scale control of minds. Her latest explicitly confirmed rank is Manipulator; the corpus does not establish advancement beyond Sequence 4. (Chapters 41, 295, 418, 613, 1055, 1189, 1320, and 2551)
Spectator gives Susie exceptional attention to expression, posture, voice, habits, and emotional leakage. Because people speak freely around a dog, she can collect information without supernatural concealment. Telepathist sharpens her reading of thoughts and emotions and supports direct mental communication, while her learned technique of vibrating air lets her speak aloud. These abilities do not make her omniscient: unfamiliar politics can exceed her background knowledge, deliberate performance can distort surface cues, and concentration on another mind can still leave blind spots. (Chapters 92, 112, 295, 310, 356, and 418)
As a Psychiatrist, Susie can Placate emotional disturbance, perform Psychoanalysis, and enter a patient's mental landscape through structured treatment. Hypnotist adds suggestions, formal hypnosis, Psychological Invisibility, and defensive Dragon Scales. A suggestion is strongest when it follows a plausible motive or unnoticed cue; it is not unconditional control over a protected or higher-level target. Psychological Invisibility causes minds to disregard her rather than bending light, so danger intuition may respond only when she prepares to attack. Her sessions with Lumian also show a clinical limit: opening a sealed memory without adequate stability can worsen the injury or transmit psychological contamination to the therapist. (Chapters 613, 1055, 1189, 1559–1561, and 1632–1634)
Dreamwalker permits Susie to enter and navigate dreams and the sea of collective subconscious, where individual minds appear as islands within a shared psychic environment. At Manipulator, she can travel that sea with Audrey, split attention through Virtual Personas, spread or suppress emotions, and apply influence across multiple minds. Demigod status also brings an incomplete mind-dragon form and much stronger psychic and physical defenses. The collective sea is not safe territory: intense fear, corruption, and mass emotion can erode an intruder, while prolonged transformation risks losing human—or canine—self-control. Susie's final assignment to Placate during the apocalypse therefore depends on endurance and judgment, not merely greater range. (Chapters 1320, 2551, and 2595)
Relationships
- Audrey Hall: Owner, teacher, closest companion, and eventual peer. Audrey obtains Susie's potions and supervises her early advancement; Susie observes Audrey in return and later works beside her as a therapist and demigod.
- Lumian Lee: Patient. Susie helps Lumian approach trauma and self-destructive impulses without forcing a complete recovery or claiming work secretly supported by Audrey as hers alone.
- Earl Hall and the Hall family: Susie's home and long-term responsibility. She spends years protecting them while Audrey travels, preserving the family bond through an era of divine conflict.
- Aurore Lee: Although they do not build a direct relationship, Aurore's memory and will to live become central anchors in Susie's treatment of Lumian.
Items
- Gold-rimmed glasses: Susie's later professional appearance includes glasses fitted to her canine form. They emphasize her role as a psychologist but are not described as a mystical item. (Chapter 2550)
- Leather carrying bag: Audrey sometimes has Susie carry potions or sensitive objects because observers underestimate her and her Hypnotist rank helps prevent theft. The bag and its contents are assignments, not a recurring personal Sealed Artifact. (Chapter 1189)
