Biography

Life in Klein's Era

Mike hired Sherlock Moriarty as protection while investigating the serial murder of women who had worked as prostitutes. At the Golden Rose he adopted a frivolous manner to question workers without endangering them, confronted the proprietor when she concealed information, and paid Klein to push farther despite the legal risk; their eavesdropping uncovered Capim’s name and connected the case to a larger criminal network. (Chapters 270–271)

Later, Mike hired Klein to escort him through East Borough for a report on poverty. Speaking with landlords, laborers, and children stripped away his initial assumptions: small gifts could relieve an immediate need, but low wages, dangerous housing, hunger, and lack of schooling formed a system no isolated charity could solve. Mike chose to document what he saw and remained a useful Backlund journalistic contact afterward. (Chapters 344 and 352–356 and 798)

Appearance and personality

Mike is in his late twenties, with sparse eyebrows, rough skin, prominent pores, charming blue eyes, and a thin mustache that makes him appear older. He can be impulsive and theatrical in pursuit of a lead, but he is empathetic, observant, and willing to revise his views when direct evidence contradicts comfortable explanations.
