Life in Klein's Era
John Maynard spent more than a decade representing Tingen for the New Party and planned to run for mayor. Madam Sharon targeted him both to vent the instability of her Demoness transformation and to intensify conflict between the New and Conservative Parties. During a gathering at his home, she used supernatural influence during their affair and killed him in a way that initially resembled a heart attack (Chapters 171–172, 194–200)
Klein’s mediumship exposed the circumstances, but Azik’s copper whistle accidentally reanimated Maynard’s corpse before Klein purified it. Pressure from Maynard’s wife and sister pushed the Nighthawks to continue investigating, which helped reveal Sharon’s abnormality and the wider conspiracy in Tingen. Maynard remained dead; the brief zombification was an external effect, not resurrection or a power he possessed (Chapters 173–174, 204–210)
Appearance and personality
Maynard is a blond, blue-eyed man in his forties with closely trimmed hair. His corpse bears an expression mixing pain and pleasure. The corpus establishes his ambition, wealth, social reach, and extramarital risk-taking but gives little direct access to his private personality before death.
Pathways and abilities
Maynard is an ordinary human with no potion, Sequence, or supernatural ability. His corpse’s sudden strength and movement result from the death aura of Azik’s copper whistle. Klein’s ritual purification ends that zombification permanently.
