Madame Alice stayed at the Hôtel du Cygne Blanc and hired the young attendant Charlie as an intimate companion, promising him a large monthly allowance and a supposedly valuable diamond necklace. Her continued patronage gave Charlie every material reason to keep her alive, but she was found suffocated in her room after one of their nights together, making him the obvious murder suspect (Chapters 1558–1567)

Lumian used a ritual dance to attach Alice's lingering spirit to himself and relived her final perception: an unseen force pressed a pillow over her face. This evidence led him toward Susanna Mattise and the supernatural cause of death, helping establish Charlie's innocence. The necklace Alice left Charlie was later appraised as counterfeit, leaving uncertain whether she knowingly deceived him or had been deceived herself (Chapters 1567–1576)

Appearance and personality

Alice was an older but well-preserved and elegant woman with thick brown eyebrows, slightly sagging cheeks, and only faint wrinkles around her eyes and mouth. She was wealthy or presented herself as wealthy, sexually demanding, and generous in promises, though the counterfeit necklace casts doubt on her honesty or judgment.

Pathways and abilities

Madame Alice is an ordinary human with no demonstrated Beyonder pathway or abilities. Her lingering spirit could be summoned and temporarily attached to Lumian after death, but this was the result of his ritual technique rather than any power of her own.

  • Charlie: Young hotel attendant whom Alice retained and whose presence made him the chief suspect in her death.
