Life in Klein's Era

Kalat was a wheelchair-using Resistance leader who traded temporary mystical objects and tried to make an outsider take up Kalvetua’s corrupted bone sword. When the sword shattered and the old Sea God died, Kalat’s lifelong faith nearly collapsed. Klein’s assumption of the Sea God identity instead gave him reforming commandments that rejected blood sacrifice. Kalat embraced the change because it matched reforms he had long wanted but feared to voice, then helped redirect the Resistance’s worship and operations toward protecting compatriots (Chapters 537–555)

Kalat acted on the new Sea God’s revelations, locating Helene, coordinating with Danitz, and maintaining the Resistance’s intelligence network. Years later, he urged action during the war but accepted Danitz’s counsel to negotiate rather than begin a destructive colonial conflict. He remained alive as one of the movement’s senior leaders, seeking independence without sacrificing the population to another foreign power (Chapters 572–580, 1248)

Appearance and personality

Kalat is a bald native man who uses a wheelchair; in his later appearance he has grown a green beard. He is perceptive, educated, fervently religious, and driven by grief over colonial violence. Beneath that fervor he is capable of self-criticism and political pragmatism, especially once the reformed commandments permit him to oppose cruel traditions.
