Biography

Cordu, Trier, and the Approaching Apocalypse

Juan Oro is president of the Fisheries Guild and a former chief of Milo who has served repeatedly as deputy host in the settlement's sea-prayer rites. He orders surveillance of the Paco family and supports the violent concealment of a previous failed prayer. To preserve the arrangement, he coerces an ordinary man into impersonating the Governor, keeps him under threat and punishment for a year, and plans to eliminate him once the handover is complete. During the new ritual, Oro again serves as deputy host under a disguise. When Lato's betrayal becomes clear, he attacks with the sea boons accumulated through many ceremonies, but the Governor's ritual authority suppresses him. Oro breaks his own sternum and sacrifices flesh and lifespan to continue resisting, choosing mutilation over surrender as the rite collapses into factional conflict. (Chapters 2011, 2012)

After outside starlight disrupts the ceremony and Lato turns on him, Oro chooses to “return to the sea.” He transforms into a humanoid lizard and merges into the water, abandoning his separate human existence while leaving the sea authority hostile to Lato. His final act preserves the tradition's power from the traitor but does not redeem the coercion and murder used to sustain it. (Chapter 2012)

Appearance and personality

Oro is an old man with sea-blue eyes, deeply lined features, and dark hair streaked or overtaken by white. He can appear in fishermen's clothing with a cane or in a formal suit suited to guild authority. He is commanding, secretive, cruel toward expendable subordinates, and fiercely possessive of Milo's ritual order. Pathways and abilities

Oro's powers come from serving as deputy host and receiving numerous sea boons, not from an established standard pathway. He can fly or move supernaturally, command water and waves, impose suffocating or crushing heaviness, and release dark green-blue beams. He can also sacrifice his body and lifespan to contest ritual authority and ultimately transform into a lizard-like form that merges with the sea. [Chapter 2011] [Chapter 2012]

Relationships

Lato is Oro's fellow ritual authority and eventual traitor, becoming the principal target of Oro's final resistance. The false Governor is his coerced tool, abused and marked for death once no longer useful. The Paco family becomes a surveillance target because its members may expose the old failed prayer, while Lumian Lee's intervention helps break the system Oro is trying to preserve. Items
