Life in Klein's Era

Inspector Tolle recognized that the apparent haunting at Deweyville's house exceeded ordinary police work and requested Nighthawk assistance. He accompanied Klein Moretti, protected the supernatural explanation from public exposure, and supported a cover involving psychological expertise and mass hysteria, allowing the police case to close without spreading panic. (Chapters 89–94)

When Maynard died under politically sensitive circumstances, Tolle again brought Klein into the investigation, controlled access to witnesses, and managed the room and body while the supposed victim briefly reanimated. He preserved evidence, obtained Madam Sharon's statement, and ensured Klein remained until the immediate danger had passed. (Chapters 171–174)

Appearance and personality

Tolle was tall, broad, thick-haired, and heavily mustached, with a growing stomach that made him look bear-like without preventing unexpectedly quick movement. He was jovial enough to joke with investigators but professional, discreet, and willing to defer when a case crossed into the occult. (Chapters 89–174)

Tolle was an ordinary police officer rather than a known Beyonder. His abilities were conventional investigation, witness management, evidence preservation, interagency coordination, and rapid physical response under pressure. (Chapters 89–174)
