Hvin Rambis is a Psychology Alchemists councilor, a consultant to the Loen royal family, and a Sequence 4 Manipulator of the Spectator pathway. He uses a polished scholarly persona to conceal large-scale psychological interference, including the Cuarón suicide and covert control of Audrey Hall. His attempt to turn Audrey into a more tightly controlled asset instead gives her and Klein Moretti the opportunity to reverse the manipulation and kill him.

Biography

Role in the Central Conflict

Hvin first emerges as the Psychology Alchemists figure behind Cuarón's engineered suicide, an incident meant to shape public opinion and political conditions. As both a councilor and a royal consultant, he occupies the point where the secret organization's psychological methods meet the ambitions surrounding George III. When he visits Audrey, he presents himself as an elegant scholar while entering her island of consciousness through the sea of collective subconscious. He tests her, explains selected principles of acting, and reinforces the organization's authority, but the concealed intrusion makes clear that recruitment and surveillance are inseparable in his approach. (Chapters 889 and 973–975)

As the political conspiracy advances, Hvin hypnotizes Audrey without creating an obvious disturbance. He orders her to influence Fors and Xio, encourage the princes, forget their meeting, and avoid seeking help through prayer or the Churches; he also places cues on servants to support the deception. Audrey's habit of examining her own mental state, Susie's assistance, and a self-hypnosis workaround allow her to pray to the Fool, who restores the suppressed memories. When Hvin later tries to invade her mind more forcefully and extract her secrets, a prepared Fate Siphon swaps their immediate fortunes. Audrey hypnotizes him and plants a trigger, enabling Klein to spring an ambush. (Chapters 1045–1050)

Hvin fights as a demigod, but his confidence in controlling supposedly weaker opponents becomes a vulnerability. Klein uses wide-area attacks to expose his Psychological Invisibility, multiple marionettes to divide his attention, and control of Spirit Body Threads to prevent recovery. Audrey's preparation removes the initiative on which Hvin relies. After becoming Klein's marionette, Hvin answers questions about the coming war and the royal conspiracy, although important memories have already been deleted. Klein then releases control and Hvin dies; Arianna erases the corpse and separates the characteristic. Audrey later uses the cleansed characteristic to advance, while a later figure in Hvin's form is only Klein's marionette disguise. The Pride persona mask Hvin had worn also helps explain his fatal tendency to underestimate weaker enemies. (Chapters 1050–1054, 1129, 1190, 1290, and 1318)

Appearance and personality

Hvin appears elderly but vigorous, with thick white hair, blue eyes, and wrinkles concentrated on his forehead. His bearing is warm, refined, and scholarly, well suited to a royal consultant whose public work depends on trust. Within the mind, however, his form exposes gray-white scales and golden vertical pupils, foreshadowing the dragonlike Mythical Creature form of a high-level Spectator. (Chapters 973–975)

He is patient enough to layer commands, erase memories, and manipulate through intermediaries, but he also treats other minds as territory he is entitled to enter. The Pride persona makes that institutional arrogance worse: confidence and refusal to credit weaker opponents leave him susceptible to Audrey's hidden resistance and Klein's prepared assault. His defeat is therefore caused not by a lack of subtlety, but by assuming that subtle control has already eliminated every source of opposition. (Chapters 1045–1053 and 1318)

Pathways and abilities

Hvin is a Sequence 4 Manipulator of the Spectator pathway. He reads emotional and behavioral cues, placates targets, applies hypnosis and psychological cues, removes or suppresses memories, and enters islands of consciousness through the sea of collective subconscious. At demigod level he can work without obvious outward signs and can arrange commands that trigger later. The target is not necessarily helpless: trained self-examination, prior safeguards, external assistance, and contradictory cues can expose or bypass his intervention. Manipulation and mental combat

Psychological Invisibility lowers Hvin's presence and exploits gaps in attention rather than making his body physically nonexistent. Broad attacks can reveal him by forcing interaction with the environment. Dragon Might and its evolved Mind Deprivation can stun, terrify, collapse, or induce fervent submission, while Mind Storm, Mind Breath, and direct subconscious invasion attack thought and emotional stability. He can spread Mental Plague or Contagious Madness through the collective subconscious and even exploit connected Spirit Body Threads. Because the disorder grows from the victim's own mind, outside blessings may only weaken it; a Manipulator can also purge or treat the infection. (Chapters 1050–1053)

Hvin can assume an incomplete Mythical Creature form resembling a huge gray-white dragon with a human head, wings, scales, and occult symbols. Simply seeing it distorts thought and can provoke self-destructive impulses. Placate lets a Spectator demigod maintain that form briefly, but remaining transformed risks madness and loss of control. Hvin's native abilities excel at control and indirect defeat rather than immediate physical destruction, which is why he supplements them with a lethal Sealed Artifact. (Chapters 1051–1053)

  • Audrey Hall: Hvin recruits, monitors, and hypnotizes Audrey as a Psychology Alchemists asset. Her disciplined self-observation lets her recover, reverse his control, and prepare his defeat.
