Doris

Doris was Lawyer Jurgen's elderly grandmother and the owner of the black cat Brody. Her warmth made her a recurring domestic acquaintance of Klein Moretti, while her chronic illness ultimately led Jurgen to place her health above his Backlund career. (Chapters 222–224 and 1084)

Life in Klein's Era

Doris employed Klein through Jurgen to find Brody after the cat disappeared. Klein recovered him, and Doris welcomed the detective with embraces and home cooking whose poor appearance belied its excellent taste, establishing an affectionate relationship beyond the original commission. (Chapters 222–224)

As Doris's chronic illness worsened, Klein and others helped persuade her to take medicine and accept care. Before war engulfed Backlund, Jurgen abandoned local opportunities and moved south with her, choosing a healthier climate and family responsibility over professional advancement. Appearance and personality

Doris was elderly and increasingly hunched by illness; she wore practical domestic clothing, including a white apron, and later protected herself from the cold with a black plush hat and thick gray-blue scarf. She was affectionate, hospitable, and stubborn enough about treatment that friends had to help Jurgen persuade her. (Chapters 222–224 and 545)

Doris was an ordinary human with no pathway, Sequence, boon, or supernatural ability. Her health problems were chronic physical illness rather than mystical corruption. (Chapters 545 and 1084)
