Daisy

Daisy is Liv's younger daughter, a literate East Borough girl rescued from Capim's trafficking ring by Klein Moretti. Education offers her a path beyond laundry work, but the Great Smog kills her mother and sister and leaves lasting trauma.

Biography

Life in Klein's Era

At thirteen or fourteen, Daisy combines laundry work with free night classes and keeps a vocabulary book that helps Klein search for her after Capim's men abduct her. When Klein opens the prisoners' cells during his attack on the villa, Daisy joins the other girls in running toward freedom. Once home, she writes a polite note thanking the detective and asking for her vocabulary book back, then returns to labor because her family cannot afford a long recovery. (Chapters 373–384, 390)

Capim's seized estate funds a bursary that lets Daisy attend public elementary school and moves the family to safer housing. She still returns during breaks to help with laundry, understanding that her schooling reduces the household's income. Seeing Freja's envy, Daisy decides to teach her older sister everything she learns at night and on Sundays, turning her own opportunity into a choice to share it rather than escape alone. The Great Smog kills Liv and Freja. Daisy chases the carriage carrying their bodies, falls repeatedly in the mud, and finally collapses in grief. She nevertheless remains in school. During a later wartime evacuation, the situation recalls the smog and makes her tremble with sadness and anger; her question about whether such disasters happen every year shows both continuing trauma and a growing awareness that survival has not made the surrounding injustice normal. Appearance and personality

Daisy is a teenage girl whose hands are burned from ironing laundry. By her later East Borough appearance she is about fifteen or sixteen and smiles brightly on recognizing Detective Moriarty. She is intelligent, polite, industrious, affectionate toward her family, and resilient, although abduction and bereavement leave deep psychological wounds. (Chapters 373, 384, 432, 481, 1084)

Pathways and abilities

Daisy is an ordinary human with no pathway or supernatural ability. Her useful skills are literacy, school learning, and familiarity with the demanding laundry work that supports her family. (Chapters 373, 384, 432)

Relationships

Liv is Daisy's mother and Freja her older sister; all three depend on one another's labor before the smog. Klein rescues Daisy as the Black Emperor while publicly posing as Sherlock Moriarty, and reporters and the resulting charity fund indirectly make her schooling possible. (Chapters 373–390, 432, 469, 481)

Items

Daisy's vocabulary book is an ordinary but personally important school item. It provides the scent sample used in the search, shows her growing literacy, and is important enough that she asks for its return after the rescue. (Chapters 373, 384)
