Cleves

Biography

Life in Klein's Era

Cleves was a former adventurer hired with Cecile and Teague to protect Urdi Branch's family during a sea voyage. His experience made him the practical authority when Donna and Denton treated danger as adventure: he taught them what mermaid stories omitted, prepared defenses, and imposed restraint when curiosity could expose the group. He did not pretend certainty when he lacked it, and deferred to Gehrman Sparrow once Bansy Harbor revealed danger beyond his own experience (Chapters 492–508)

During Bansy's violent night, Cleves kept his employers together, helped move them through the storm, and supported the decisions that brought the survivors back to the White Agate. His family group later contributed to the payment thanking Gehrman for the rescue. Cleves remained alive, having completed the protection assignment despite a threat no ordinary travel contract could reasonably anticipate (Chapters 509–517)

Appearance and personality

Cleves is described as a boorish, reserved man whose bearing reflects years as an adventurer. He is terse, calm, observant, and protective without being sentimental. His greatest strength is judgment: he knows when to make a plan, when to silence an argument, and when another person has become the safer leader (Chapters 492–517)

Pathways and abilities

The corpus does not confirm that Cleves is a Beyonder or name a potion Sequence. He demonstrates firearms training, trap preparation, maritime knowledge, physical steadiness, and extensive adventuring experience. These ordinary competencies should not be upgraded into supernatural abilities without evidence (Chapters 492–517)
